I think Duke would be a great choice, any change is welcome at this point. Hard to say who's out, because we don't know if one or the guitarists left by his own choice or if Dylan fired one of them. I can't really see Dylan firing Charlie in a way that it happened with past band members, but what do I know?

Charlie certainly didn't look happy for much of 2012, so I suspect it's him, however, as it's been pointed out before, Charlie might potentially be a better partner for Duke than Stu.

I'm surprised Charlie lasted this long really. In 2009, when he first re-joined Bob we saw the show in Rockford, IL and it was great, Charlie was rippin' it up and it seemed like he had free-reign to play what he wanted on every song. We saw the show a year later, Charlie had been reigned in and Bob was hogging up the solo space on the organ. Charlie seemed to be literally pouting onstage. I think Bob needs to let who ever he hires play. That being said, Denny had a more understated stage presence whereas Charlie is a major extrovert and attention-hog onstage and maybe that is why Bob squelched him.

At any rate, I'd be glad for someone new. I couldn't stand going to any more shows and seeing Charlie visibly irritated with Bob and even appearing to be pouting.

Although I can only find 2 dates posted if we exclude the Aussie Blues Fest...

Upcoming concerts
WEDNESDAY 27 FEBRUARY 2013
Duke Robillard
Kulturzentrum Merlin
Stuttgart, Germany

THURSDAY 28 FEBRUARY 2013
Duke Robillard

More Duke Robillard dates listed on the Rosebud Agency site, including the 29th in his home town of Woonsocket. If anyone is going, please ask him about the Dylan thing to verify and/or confirm this juicy rumor. Chan's ain't that big. Neither is their beer selection, if I recall correctly. I think I went to a comedy show there decades ago.

Duke Robillard Live At Chan's

at Chan's Restaurant, Woonsocket, RI
The Legendary Duke Robillard returns to Chans. The award-winning guitar virtuoso is one of the most versatile musicians and producers today.

The European tour has further scattered dates until at least March 9. I haven't found a full schedule yet, but I'm sure he'll have to do at least two weeks to make it a viable trip. Looks like he'll be playing mostly Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

If Bob had hired someone he didn't really know before - like Freddy Koella - that could be true, however, Bob's been FRIENDS with Charlie for 30 years and Charlie played in his band for over three years, so I'm sure Dylan knew very well what he was getting into from the (second) get-go.

I like the sound of Robillard, so this could be good news, it would totally depend on how Bob deploys him.
I'd suspect Charlie's on the way out and would be surprised if Duke is replacing Stu.

Charlie and Duke together with Bob deciding to let them have at it could be exciting. :D :D

The Duke's gonna splash some habanero on Early Roman Kings and turn it into a 12-alarm blaze.

Been thinking about the permutations since finding and posting this yesterday.

The obvious one is that Charlie goes but he's awesome and has been on an tight leash since coming back. I'll never forget some of the solos Charlie done on Highway 61 in 2000 and it would be sad to see him go again!

Replacing Stu who is another superb player would be the fans option. Sorry if you're reading this Stu but Charlie unleashed is what's required.

Even though we really don't want see any musician out of work somebody will be going and it'll be Charlie or Stu.

We went to the last gig in Brooklyn (3000+ miles from Scotland) and if anything the Tempest tunes fell flat so the previous comments about bringing the Tempest songs hit the nail on the head!

What if Bob has sacked himself?

Thanks a lot for relaying the article here yesterday, skelters. I can't even imagine Duke Robillard in the band as early as next tour. He's gonna rip.

Solid scoop on your part Skelters, and we thank you for that. So now to speculate...

Let's see...the band as of last leg looked like this:
Bob - keyboard, piano, harp, guitar
Tony - bass
George - drums
Donnie Herron - viola, violin, electric mandolin, pedal steel, lap steel, banjo, other
Stu Kimball - rhythm guitar, with an occasional lead and/or noodle
Charlie Sexton - lead guitar, suppressed to the max

Options, in order of likelihood:
1. Charlie replaced by Duke (most probable)
2. Stu replaced by Duke (most desirable)
3. Duke simply added to the mix (doubtful, but interesting)
4. Charlie AND Stu both replaced and Duke is one of two new guitarists
5. Donnie leaves
6. Bob sacks himself

Skelters: Tell me, tell me, tell me, c'mon tell me the answer...

My choices:
Donnie out: Orif not out released from the role of either 1. shadowing dylan or 2. being turned down to zero in the mix

Charlie out: 2000-2001 were some of the best shows I've ever seen, but that ship is sailed and it ain't coming back.

Stu in: He's a great player and I've been enjoying hearing more lead work from him the past year or so.

Duke is excellent, but I was hoping for Larry's return. Anyway, the least essential member is Stu--I've often wondered at shows these past few years just what Stu is doing in the band, musically speaking. Hope he's the one to go.

Would hate to see Stu or Charlie go!

But maybe Duke is going to just be added as a 3rd guitarist.... perhaps Bob got used to having Mark up there with them the last two years, he's now desiring a bit of extra guitar because of it?

Then Bob could pick up the guitar again and they could be a force, like the 4-guitar-Outlaws doing Green Grass & Hightides back in the day.

Merry Chistmas.
