Hog country. And corn. And Dylan.

From: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/articl ... -back-home

Des Moines, Iowa, USA - Over the last decade, Bob Dylan has made a number of appearances in Iowa, changing up the venue each time. He has played the Iowa State Fair Grandstand (2001), Principal Park with Willie Nelson (2004), an intimate show at the Val Air Ballroom with Merle Haggard (2006) and most recently at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls (2010). On Wednesday, Aug. 22 he returns to Des Moines to play the state’s biggest stage, Wells Fargo Arena.

Dylan has released 35 studio albums over his 50-plus year career. With that kind of output to choose from, it’s unlikely he’s going to pull a deep cut off an album like “Saved.” But here are a few of the songs that have made repeat appearances on Dylan set lists the last few times he’s played Iowa, as well as being featured in recent shows.

• “Like a Rolling Stone”

• “All Along the Watchtower”

• “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat”

• “Highway 61 Revisited”

• “Maggie’s Farm”

It’s been a big year for Dylan. In May he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from Barrack Obama. He has a “new” live album out this year, “Live in New York Gas Light Cafe 1961.”

In January a Dylan tribute album, “Chimes of Freedom,” was released, with the proceeds benefiting Amnesty International. Unlike a traditional tribute album, “Chimes” features 73 tracks spread across four discs. The compilation includes performances by everyone from Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Kris Kristofferson to My Chemical Romance, Maroon 5 and even Miley Cyrus.

On Sept. 11 Dylan will release his 35th studio album, “Tempest,” which comes 50 years after his self-titled debut dropped. Just as “Chimes of Freedom” paid tribute to Dylan, Dylan is using “Tempest” to pay tribute to one of his musical heroes: John Lennon. The song “Roll On John” closes out the album and includes references to several Beatles songs. “Roll On John” is also the name of a traditional folk song that Dylan covered on the Cynthia Gooding radio show in 1962. A bootleg of the recording was re-released in recent years as “Bob Dylan: Folksinger’s Choice.”

Dylan’s current tour is the same one he’s been on for more than 20 years. It’s been dubbed “the never-ending tour” (not by Dylan, who has criticized the term several times) because it has continued since 1988. The longest stretch without performing during that time came in 1997, when Dylan nearly died from a chest infection. He took three months off and then hit the road again.

A "new" live album would actually be a very good idea....

Hi J.P.
Since all Dylan concerts, since 2000 have been recorded (Confirmed from people "inside"), it's a lot of material to choose from.
"Problem" for me is that i've most of em as boots, with great sound (loss less sound - FLAC).

"Rainy Day" makes an appearance as the opener tonight. At least I hope!

Anyone going to be in Ft Wayne, Indy, or Cincy? I have front row center stage for the latter two....track me down and I'll buy the beers!

I know, it's not so hard to figure. They could do it without problems.... they wouldn't force you to buy it. Anyway, they have released live recordings and not used their own tapes before.

When we were young and broken down there, in a van, we said it stood for Idiots Out Wandering About. We were referring to ourselves though.

Sitting through my first run of Ry Cooder's new Election Special CD.
Really a treat so far, really. Fun background music for this set list.
Acoustic. Mandolins guitars, nice stuff. Just him and his son, Joachim.
Beautiful.
