I find the lyrics very Shakespearian but with a hint towards the classical greek poets in the style of the wording... and I feel that this album could prove to be Dylan's most academical... per se, artistical of literature in nature.

It's repetitive and dull, isn't it? He's just rolling the arm over, really. The title's catchy enough and he sure do growl tuff, but he's stuck in a lyrical rut that his vocal straitjacket won't allow him to transcend.

It is repetitive, but so are these kinds of basic blues. Let's just hope every songs won't sound this way. Yet, I find the vocals really clear on this one!

I'll be skipping over this one whenever I listen to the new album.

I also have a feeling he will be playing this live every night ala Summer Days ala Thunder on the Mountain.

But singing the words to Jolene instead, I reckon - no way he'll remember these ones.

Just make up some new ones, then:

oh that takeaway called Ming's
with its sharksfin soups
Mai Tai's for gluttons
odoreaters from Boots

This is why I dislike YouTube compared to streaming audio sites. Whoever uploaded this thinks they can give us a "quiz" about what Early Roman Kings "really means." Very reminiscent of the Pennsylvania newspaper that declared Duquesne Whistle was about some industrial accident. How the hell can anyone claim to definitively know what the lyrics to a song mean?

Oh wait, I remember, because it's 2012. Nothing needs to be true, backed up with facts, researched or documented. You just say it, and all the idiots of the world go "whoa dude, so that's what that means." Arggggghhhh.

Bravo Bob! The standard of service in restaurant these days is poor and the food is way too expensive. I agree.

Anyone care to comment on the ERK mix? Played it to a (drunk) friend over the weekend whose initial reaction was that it was too low in the mix and a tad drowned out by the music. I disagreed but he may be influenced by his love for the MT mix where Bob's vocal is up front big time and the music has (presumably) consciously been quietened down to let the vocal take centre stage. I feel there is a nice balance on ERK overall. Any thoughts?

It works a lot better as a whole song than in the little bits we got earlier.

Lyrically it's several cuts above dreck such as 'Wife's Hometown,' 'Levee,' or (God he'p us) 'Jolene.' There's a story here and some memorable lines. While not a great Dylan song, obviously, it no doubt works nicely as a relatively straightforward album track.

As far as the album goes, I think I'm expecting a sort of lower-grade version of L & T, inasmuch as it's probably defined less by specific Major Songs (as MT was) than by a batch of very solid numbers from start to finish. Just a guess, based on the two clips thus far revealed.

I lisetened to the snippet that first was released on the internet. But now I will resist any further leakings until I have the cd in my hand and give it the appropriate first listen that it (hopefully) deserves.

After listening again and again to the 59 seconds of Scarlet Town, I'm sure it does.

Blues generally follows a 1-4-5 pattern (e.g. in the key of C it would move from C to F to G) though the I'm A Man/Mannish Boy pattern generally sticks on a single chord. Early Roman Kings is interesting in that it follows a 1-4 pattern, playing the 4th where the 5th would usually be played. I haven't come across this pattern before, though it works since the 7th note on the 4th chord suggests the 5th.

Apologies to all those to whom this is gobbledegook.

Would you know what key this is in? I'm trying to play the riff out on my piano and I only found a Bad to the Bone one in D, but I'm not sure if this in D. Maybe Eb?
