Some people have stated this song is his most autobiographical. I agree.

I too dislike the duet version with patti.

Bob and Patti together is a great concept. As is usually the case when Bob duets with other artists the Dark Eyes thing was a bit underwhelming. Great to see them together though!

Each to his own understanding, and happy if my take is far too simple, but I've always felt those dark eyes were ours. That from the stage he can only see an array of faces with shadowed eyes and it's on stage that he feels himself. Outside where life is more animated and colourful, he feels unconnected. Classic Dylan reversals and contrasts. Am I alone in thinking this? I guess a part-test would be first hand knowledge. I've certainly never stood on a stage in semi-darkness and looked out across the serried ranks. Might it be true that all you see are dark eyes? Performers, step up.

A million faces at my feet BUT all I see are dark eyes...

...we are the million faces at his feet, but I think the dark eyes are those of the mother whose child has gone astray, those of the French girl, those of the soldier deep in prayer, those of the people whose hunger pays a heavy price...
I see this song as some sort of Hard rain twenty years later, more concentrated, more resigned, maybe more deep... my favoured from the eighties.
A great cover is that of Judy Collins, a real classic. Bob strums it away as if he was afraid that it could be taken too seriously...
