Let's not forget that Lay Lady Lay was his best charting single. I mean, sure, the Nasville Voice isn't the one that he's famous for, but on the other hand, it was never really used on many of his truly greatest songs (certainly not in any way that got out to a broad audience). It obviously had the potential--realized in LLL--to be popular, at least in the short term.
Now I have to start this by saying that I love this song... now..... but if you were a bartender in the 70s as I was, then this song was jukebox kicker.... back then the jukeboxes only had 45's on them.... so the song selection was limited.... and after midnight you know if you saw some guy trying to get some has smashed girl to head out the door with him he would head to the jukebox with his quarter.... and yep, he would play Lay Lady Lay.... so he would get the girl out the door and the closest bartender to the juke box would kick it to make it skip because you would be so sick of hearing it.....
Yep, Bob and his jukebox kicker song helped a lot of guys get lucky in the 70s.... some of you younger ones just might own your very beginnings to that song....

just put it one and see if what mama got to say.....
