It has been proposed in another thread that Bob is sounding like Louis Armstrong in his last years. I called this an insult to Louis, because I think his worst gargling is so full of warmth, joy and melody that a comparison wth Dylan's rasp hadn't even crossed my mind.

But what do others think?

I don't think we should insult Bob - what do you think about that? This is a Bob Dylan fan site. Surely you could do your Louis Armstrong appreciation on the 'Other Artists' thread.

Louis' voice was warm and wonderful, nothing like Dylan's diseased rasp-belch-hack-whisper.

Here's a serious question...

Was Louis' voice always like that? Even when he was a youngster? I'm not familiar with his work as a young guy.

As his music progressed and popularity grew, his singing also became very important. Armstrong was not the first to record scat singing, but he was masterful at it and helped popularize it. He had a hit with his playing and scat singing on "Heebie Jeebies" when, according to some legends, the sheet music fell on the floor and he simply started singing nonsense syllables. Armstrong stated in his memoirs that this actually occurred. He also sang out "I done forgot the words" in the middle of recording "I'm A Ding Dong Daddy From Dumas".

Such records were hits and scat singing became a major part of his performances. Long before this, however, Armstrong was playing around with his vocals, shortening and lengthening phrases, interjecting improvisations, using his voice as creatively as his trumpet.

This is totally different from Dylan mostly farting into a microphone with his face.

Armstrong, by the way, died a month short of his 70th birth day. His funeral was a major event in NY and his pallbearers included Governor Rockefeller, Mayor Lindsay, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Guy Lombardo, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Pearl Bailey, Count Basie, Harry James, Frank Sinatra, Ed Sullivan, Earl Wilson, Alan King, Johnny Carson, David Frost, Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett and Bobby Hackett.

Hal, yes it was: listen to the young (30-ish) Louis here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3CcAD_seww ... about 3 mins in ...

Turning into Louis? Nah, more like Davros: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr-Vt9Eu ... re=related

I love Dylan's singing, but it really doesn't sound much like the always melodic Armstrong to me.

Personally, I think he's turning into Emmett Miller.

Quote:
Oscar Vogel: Hello Jack. Do you know me?

Jack Fate: You look familiar.

OV: I was the star of the show here. One of the biggest stars. I was one of your father's favorite performers once. Everything was going great... just as long as you kept your mouth shut. But he was doing things that were wrong, your father. His desire for retaliation and revenge was too strong.

I was the only one in any position to say anything, everybody else was too scared. I had the show, I had a forum. So, I spoke out. It's not what goes in the mouth. It's what comes out that counts.

OV: They said it was an accident (strums banjo). Some even said it was a suicide. Some people choose to die in all kinds of ways. Some people jump out of buildings and slit their wrists on the way down. Some fall on their own swords. I opened my mouth. You remember? My name is Oscar Vogel.

JF: Oscar Vogel.

OV: (strums banjo)

JF: Well, I gotta get back to the stage.

OV: The stage? Ah yes, the stage. 'The whole world is a stage.'

In 1999-2000 there was more consensus around Armstrong being the most important musical figure of the 20th Century than anything else.

I'd love to hear Bob sing mack the knife. I doubt it will ever happen though. Its an interesting pairing. They've both flirted with country music. Here's Louis with Johnny Cash. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47MeAVHpvxU

I've always enjoyed it when Van does his Armstrong impersonation. It can be heard at the end of his cover of "Lonely & Blue."

As for the comparisons of Dylan to Armstrong. Oye. Thank God it's Friday.

My pleasure. That scene with "Oscar Vogel" has always been one of my favorites and I suspect is the key to the movie. Not to hijack the thread, but Vogel's earlier comment, "It's not what goes in the mouth. It's what comes out that counts." a paraphrase of Matthew 15:11 (Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.) was/is apparently so important to Dylan that it's been used in two movies associated with him, M&A and "I'm Not There."

I'm thinking you could also read that verese from Matthew as a way of saying that homosexual sex isn't reprehensible in the eyes of God, gay bashing is.
