"There are no veils, curtains, doors, walls, anything, between what pours out of Bob's hand onto the page and what is somehow available to the core of people who are believers in him. Some people would say, you know, 'not interested,' but if you're interested, he goes way, way deep." --Joan Baez in No Direction Home

You're right, it is a great line. I was watching the rerun the other night on PBS and that line hit me too. However, there was a couple of lines by Alan Ginsberg that I thought were just as good. He was talking about how when Bob was on fire in the 60's he was like a walking, breathing shaman. I don't have the script handy, but if one of the wizards here could find it, it would be a real treat.

Ginsberg's quotes in Ratso's Rolling Thunder book are real highlights. The guy's living on another planet.

Baez's quote is great because it addresses the basic mystery of how somebody who, to his admirers, just seems self-evidently to be one of the greatest artists in the history of popular song - whose work an intelligent person can truly spend a lifetime exploring and enjoying - leaves the other half of the human race utterly indifferent or even hostile. It's like my wife. Bob Dylan is just some irritant she has to tolerate as a result of one of her husband's obsessions. There will be no converting her or even intriguing her, no matter how much brilliant music I play in her presence. She's simply impenetrable to the allure of Dylan.

Bob put it pretty well himself: 'I feel my stuff is very hard-edged and not everyone's cup of tea.' Plain spoken and on the mark.

And then there's the claim by some critic - I forget who - who addressed the narrower question of Dylan's singing by suggesting that Bob Dylan is 'one of the greatest singers in the history of American music...with one of the harshest voices.' That's a good comment to offer anyone who says Dylan can't sing. I return to these three quotations a lot whenever I confront the puzzle of the depth of Bob's fascination for his fans and the sheer impenetrable indifference of everyone else toward his music, or whenever someone asks me - the question itself being a sign of someone who just can't hear it - what I see in Dylan's work.

Ginsberg does enliven that already vigorous book. The guy's living on another planet, of course, in the sense that he's dead, as he'd be among the first to admit. In No Direction Home he comes up with :

"What struck me was that he had become one - or had become identical with his breath. Dylan had become a column of air, so to speak, at certain moments, where his total physical and mental focus was this single breath coming out of his body. He had found a way in public to be almost like a shaman, with all of his intelligence and consciousness focused on his breath".

Thanks for finding that. In looking for that, I found some other Ginsberg things on Dylan. Here's one -

ON READING DYLAN'S WRITINGS (Allen Ginsberg)
July, 1973, London
reprinted in Klaus Humann & Carl-Ludwig Reichert, Rock Session 3, Hamburg, 1979,
p. 142.

Now that it's dust and ashes
now that it's human skin
Here's to you Bob Dylan
a poem for the laurels you win

Sincerest form of flattery
is imitation they say
I've broke my long line down
to write a song your way

Those "chains of flashing images"
that came to you at night
were highest farm boy's day dreams
that glimpse the Angels light.

And tho the dross of wisdom's come
and left you lone on earth
remember when the Angels call
your soul for a new birth

It wasn't dope that gave you truth
nor money that you stole
-- was God himself that entered in
shining your heavenly soul.

Here's some more Ginsberg from NDH -

Movie Name: No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)
Quote:

Allen Ginsberg: There is a very famous saying among Tibetan
Buddhists: "If the student is not better than the teacher, then the
teacher is a failure."
Allen Ginsberg: Its sort of a biblical prophecy.
Allen Ginsberg: Poetry is words that are empowered to make your hair
stand on end, that you realize instantly as being some form of
subjective truth that has an objective reality to it, because
somebody has realized it. Then you call it poetry later.

Maybe not the best but one of my favorites - by Patti Smith:

Dylan’s such a f ucking maniac. Y’know, I’ve not said anything specifically, but I hope I’ve done something here to remind how intense he is, and how much that intensity has only been successfully revealed through abstract expressionism in rock’n'roll. I look at him and I don’t see a guy giving out leaflets, holding a banner. I see a machine gun.”

Love the machine gun analogy.

Patti's the bee's knees. :)

This is not exact..... but as best as I can remember...

Arlo Guthrie was talking about song writing and saying the you just went fishing in the stream and see what you could catch floating by.... and that anybody fishing downstream of Dylan wasn't catching much....

Baez's quote about Dylan is also my very favorite about him, it explains so much with a perfect economy of words. And her passion is so evident.

I absolutely love that quote, especially watching Bob sing VOJ on NDH!! Perfect reporting of what is happening before our eyes.
BEAUTIFUL. Thanks for posting, telltale - I've been trying to remember that quote lately.
