That's interesting. Sure. But why would they care if Bob swore on stage?

Because that's part of the contract (for many artists, apparently), and if they caught him doing so, they could sue him for breach of contract.... to their adventage.

Yes, I imagine that's part of the contract for many artists. Perhaps the eye has multi meanings for Bob. And is as well a comment on all authority--both other-worldly and the kings of this world. Hard to believe the eye as designed would be something imposed upon him by Sony.

It is curious though that Columbia uses a one eye logo as well.

Yes, there is definitely some kind of Amun-Re, illuminati, freemason columbia statue of liberty thing floating around this whole eye logo.

wasn't it in 2001 that he started using it?

I think the logo comes from indian motives. Long time ago (before it apeared on stage) I bought a scarf from India. After I have seen the logo several times on stage I suddenly realized it's the modified motive from that scarf. To my opinion it is only for decorative purposes but anyway I asked my indian colleagues to find out about the meaning of the "eye".

They're gonna tell you, "I don't know, I saw it at a Bob Dylan show."

Yeah, I don't buy that rumor.

I heard the eye was designed by his dresser too. I do think it is weird that Sony has the eye thing too, but I can't see them imposing it upon Bob, but maybe they did. Now that I think about it, that is the best explanation for him having it. It just doesn't fit Bob to me. They told him to get an eye and his dresser designed it. I have always read that Bob doesn't swear much; they sure put some weird things in contracts. I never really thought about the contracts until now. Interesting thread for me. Love, Joanna XOXO

Further back a few people were curious about when Bob started using the logo. I don't know exactly when but the logo is on the 2000 tour shirts. I remember seeing it as a stage backdrop in the spring of 2003. Possibly before that.

I thought it was in the last half of the 90's. It's all such a blur.

Time goes back so fast; it is a blur! Maybe we could petition Sony and tell them that we don't like it. Does anybody like it? I know some people probably do like the Eye of Horus or whatever it is called, but I don't think of that when I see it. I just see Big Brother. Love, Joanna XOXO

Whoa! Perspective change time for you young lady! Big Brother??? No. And no petition will be signed here, Johanna. I must admit, I love this symbol. (though NOT the version with the Bob Dylan words in it, since we already know who it represents).
The reason that I love it is that it reminds me so much of a WONDERFUL segment of an INCREDIBLE career journey. I vote to keep it, and to bring back Nag Champa while we're at it. Of course, we are all entitled to our opinions. It saddens me to think that this symbol doesn't bring joyful memories to those that have watched it unfurl or shine in the background of such fantastic musical moments over the past decade+.

Barefoot, I am glad that some people do like it. There must be an underlying psychological reason I don't like it. Maybe I have read too many Dan Brown books! I hated the Sony eye on his website too. You could tell that they were looking at you as it would suddenly appear; very weird and kind of scary - that did feel like Big Brother. Maybe I just associate it with that. Love, Joanna XOXOX

Well, i understand that some don't like it. There might be an underlying psychotic reason that I do like it.

Barefoot, not even The Eye can detract me from looking at Bob; I have to remind myself that there ARE other people up there! :D Love, Joanna XOXO

Barefoot, I think I understand the eye better and it is NOT scary. I read The Ground Beneath Her Feet by Salman Rushdie, who is Indian and I don't believe he is Muslim or Hindu, but a Parsi. That is just my opinion. This book is based on the Oprheus and Eurydice myth and the Orpheus part is pretty much Bob or Salman based his character on Bob - the storyline goes everywhere and it is not always Bob's story, but sometimes it is; the character stays true to what I know of Bob's character with a few quirks or twists added to it. Anyway, it mentions the eye and the hero loes his eyesight after an accident which is how he saw into a different world. He didn't totally lose it; that part was a little confusing! Anyway, it was a great book to read if you are a Dylan fan and I am no longer afraid of it being Big Brother. I do think it is based on Indian (the continent) culture especially one of the different sects, The Parsis who believe in Zoroastrianism. India is a very hard place to figure out so I might have got that part wrong, but everybody in the novel was a Parsi and most of the Indians who initially came to England were Parsis. I would love to go there; it is a fascinating place. Love, Joanna XOXO

I once stayed with a Parsi family in Bombay. They had never heard of Bob Dylan nor the Eye. Although that was prior to the Eye being associated with Dylan, so I didn't really look for it. One of them took me to a Parsi Dakhma. Crazy. What a sight! Me hanging off the back of a little motor scooter with a large saried woman at the helm, buzzing the streets of that incredible city. Glad you don't associate the Eye with Big Bro' anymore. I will have to pick up that Rushdie book. I don't think I've read any of his stuff since the Ayatollah issued his fatwa back in the late 80's. Read Midnight's Children if you are interested in India and like Rushdie's writing. Meanwhile, we'll see where the Eye happens next: jcastro's tattoo, or on stage in Rio.

Barefoot - I like your name because I rarely wear shoes, just flip flops and that's why I fall a lot! Well, I am not positive that he is a Parsi, but the characters in the book all were and honestly, I am not sure what their religion entails as the characters really didn't practice that religion. It was a lot about Greek myths too and I know Giada would love it; Salman obviously loves the Greek myths because I learned a lot of them from this book. The eye was to another world; it could be the underworld - sometimes it was. I am definitely going to read more of his. Have you read A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry? I have read it twice since I got it about a year ago. It is about India in the Indira Gandhi days and it is written just like a Dickens novel and it is fabulous. It is also very sad because of the living conditions of some of the characters. I am sure I will read it again when I have run out of the books I was just given and I stare at War and Peace sitting on my fireplace waiting for me! I was going to try and describe Bombay in my prior post because that is where everybody is from in Rushdie's book, but I gave up and deleted that part. It sounds absolutely fantastic and colors everywhere and noise all over the place. I would love to go there; I have always wanted to go there. I can totally see that incident in my mind. Great story! There must be a lot of Parsis in Bombay I am thinking now! Really, I don't know anything about the religion, but I think most of the early Indian settlers that came to England were Parsis. I am going to have to do some research on the Parsis! Love, Joanna XOXO
