Well I wanted to say "Sweetheart Like you" but it appears here and there on this thread, so it's quite mid-rated.

1. "I & I" is his best track not mentioned enough times
2. "Obviously 5 Believers"
3. "Shot Of Love"
4. "What Can i Do For You"
5. "Highlands"

I'd sign up for any of these, although I'm never sure what underrated means. Some others:

Bob Dylan's Dream
Went to see the gypsy
Tough Mama
New Pony
Clean Cut Kid

Handy Dandy should be on here, too

Never Say Goodbye
I And I
Ring Them Bells
Cross The Green Mountain
In The Summertime (or Changing of The Guards or Where are You Tonight)

I would also add City Of Gold (unrecorded(?), unreleased, but still underrated)- And isn't Lay Down Your Weary Tune an underrated masterpiece as well?

1. Under your spell
Great track from a widely disliked LP (but not as bad as some make out).
2. Never say goodbye
This is a great track
3. Shot of Love
I prefer the bootleg version that starts off with a little piano roll, but the studio version is great. I am one of those who likes hearing the girls wailing away.
4. Cry a while
Great track from a great album - overshadowed by Mississppi and High Water I suppose but the phrasing is superb.
5 - Handy Dandy
Another one from a not so good LP but phrasing is fantastic.

Corrina, Corrina- This is just the best

Christmas Island- Must Be Santa got well-deserved recognition, but this one was really interesting. Love the way he says the "How'd ya like to spend Christmas, on Christmas Island?" part

Chimes Of Freedom- Maybe this gets more recognition than I know about, but it's just so FULL of stunning images

Life Is Hard- The very high voice is great- the song message kills

Rollin' & Tumblin" Love the beginning of this one, the part that sounds like train wheels rolling

It would appear so far the following Bob Dylan songs are his most underrated as stated on this forum:

tweedle dum 1
dark eyes 1
Most of the time
Billy Main title or 4
Tight Connection to My Heart
Dirge
Never Say Goodbye
Shot of Love
Handy Dandy
Girl from the red river shore

An Interesting list to say the least. I can understand why "tweedle", "tight connection", "shot of love", and "handy dandy" would be there but I personally haven't heard to many, if any, negative comments about the rest. In fact I thought they were well loved by most Dylan fans.

The real question is underrated by whom? I think many people in these parts overrate a lot of his songs. :)

So, I interpreted that as underrated by the public at large.

Black Diamond Bay

Red River Shore
Groom's Still Waiting At The Altar
When I Paint My Masterpiece

Underrated by the public at large? I'd say that would be just about anything he's written.

I'm not sure about that. Bob (justly) receives plenty of accolades outside of this forum.

But coming up with underrated songs for this crowd is a near-impossible task!

Romance In durango is just an exquisite song and so well recorded. Crisp, crisp, crisp. Close your eyes and be transported.

Agreed. I really like most of the live Rolling Thunder versions aswell. The one on Biograph is unbelievable. This is one of those songs that I really didn't like at first, maybe because it is so different, but it didn't take long for me to come around. Now it's one of my favorite's. :) And I totally get what you mean by being "transported"...you should try listening to it on mushrooms.

I'll take
Quote:
underrated
to be songs which are good enough to receive more attention than they do.

Some good ones mentioned already, I would add:

Hazel
Jim Jones
Canadee-i-o
Lone Pilgrim
I Threw It All Away

1. From a Buick 6- funky little number, funny, cool organ and guitar riff
2. You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go- one of my favorites by him, great sentiment, lyrics, nice bass guitar, and an effortless middle eight.
3. 4th Time Around- love those acoustic nylon guitars, immediately makes me think all this weird stuff is happening in Italy
4. Oxford Town- nice guitar sound on this- sounds like open tuning and it sounds like a fiddle
5. Tell Me that it Isn't True- that little steel guitar riff, and like the rest of Nashville Skyline, Bob does a nice middle eight

I'm not really a seasoned Dylan fan by any means, but here are mine:

Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?
When I Paint My Masterpiece
Mixed Up Confusion
Changing of the Guard
You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (the basement tapes version)

4. Covenant Woman
5. We Better Talk This Over

Then again, what is underrated is subjective. But I love these songs and they don't seem very popular or much spoken about.
