I've always had a hard time seeing what the big deal was with Blind Willie McTell. I mean it's a good song, but damn. It gets hyped up like it's one of his finest. I like the song it just seems like the legend of the song far outweighs how good of a song it actually is.

Blind Willie McTell is one of his finest. By the time I became a fan, it was already officially released, so I wasn't around while it was just being bootlegged. I don't like hype, but sometimes the hype is deserved. The whole song just transports me to some midnight southland wooded area from Tom Sayer's time. It's a dooming beautiful lonesome song. Read this, its from this site and pretty interesting http://expectingrain.com/dok/songs/bwmctell.html

To each his own, but I don't think i've ever come across a Dylan fan who didn't love this song, until now.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the song. As you saw it was in my Top 5 from Bootleg Vol. 3 also. It's just it's always seen as one of his best songs ever or something and I just don't see it. I don't think it would crack my Top 100 Dylan songs.

Now I'm through with the Bootleg Series, too. Some personal observations:

- For me, the hardest bootleg to rank was BS Vol. 5 because there are so many incredible performances on it ("Isis", "TUIB", ...). The Rolling Thunder Revue was an amazing tour ... but I was born too late :( ... Anyway, without doubt I'd say it's my favorite part of the series.
- I realized that BS 7 is actually pretty good ... I don't know why I hardly ever listen to it. I should give it a try more often. The songs from the Newport Folk Festivel are worth the price alone.
- Say what you want, but I think that there are some nice songs on the Witmark Demos. "Farewell", "Guess I'm Doin' Fine", "The Death of Emmett Till", to name a few. I don't want to say it's perfect, but it's not as bad as everybody says.

Bootleg Series Vol. 1

1. Moonshiner
2. Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie
3. Rambling Gambling Willie
4. Let Me Die In My Footsteps
5. Only A Hobo

2. She's Your Lover Now
3. Tangled Up In Blue
4. Eternal Circle
5. I'll Keep It With Mine

Bootleg Series Vol. 3

1. Blind Willie McTell
2. Angelina
3. Every Grain of Sand
4. Seven Days
5. Foot of Pride

Bootleg Series Vol. 4

1. Mr. Tambourine Man
2. Ballad Of A Thin Man
3. Like A Rolling Stone
4. Baby, Let Me Follow You Down
5. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

Bootleg Series Vol. 5

1. Tangled Up In Blue
2. Isis
3. A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall

You and I are in agreement that Bootleg Series Vol. 5 is the best of the series. I think you could make the case that Vol. 4 and Vol. 5 are among the best official Dylan releases period. Though some of his albums are certainly right up there with them, and for the quantity and quality of Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3 you can't leave that out either.
