I have about 10 Dylan releases on vinyl and all of them sound really great except my copy of Street Legal. It is in pristine condition so I am trying to figure out why. It has a muffled sound to my ears. I only got my turntable running a few days ago so previously I had been listening to Street Legal on CD. The CD was issued in '99 so was it remastered? The LP is a Columbia issue from '78 so a first or early pressing, I guess. Could this be the difference I am hearing?

I think the original Street-Legal has long been critizised for less than stellar sound. It has been cleaned up for CD re-issue at one point, so I guess your CD is one of the newer versions.

thanks Troub and JP. That must be what it is. That's disappointing because I love Street Legal but why would I want to listen to it a lesser quality than what I have been enjoying :(

Does anyone know if it was ever released on another label or a different/better pressing somewhere?

Check searchingforagem.com, it's a great resource for these kinds of questions. (The front page might redirect you to another side, but if you click any of the front page links quickly, the rest of the site works just fine.)

http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=SVLP0197 just checked my copy and it appears to be the remaster on this label. I think I am correct in saying that the original "Changing of the guards" had a sax on the outro but was not that obvious on the remaster?

Thanks. Searching for A Gem didn't have much information on sound, but I did find that a remastered vinyl has been released on another label Simply Vinyl. I found some for sale on discogs.com so I may try to get one of those when I am able. Of course, it is way more expensive than my '78 relelase. :|

A review from discogs on the remastered version
Quote:
If you want to buy "Street-Legal" on vinyl then go for the (now deleted) Simply Vinyl reissue.
While the front cover reproduction is not so good (too much red), the music itself sounds way better than on the original release which was mastered poorly back in 1978.
Here you get the bright and fat sound of the much praised 1999 remaster that was also used for several cd versions.
So crank up the volume and give this underrated album a second chance!

In my opinion the best sounding Street Legal is the SACD jewel case reissue. I don't have a SACD player but it sounds awesome on a regular player compared with the 80's CD release and the simply vinyl reissue. I use these two to demo to my friends the difference in sound. The difference is astounding. More so than any of the other SACd remasters and I have them all. The simply vinyl reissue is awful and I have to crank the sound right up as its so quiet.

used vinyls... is that what the kids are calling 'em these days? And I thought that sort of thing was prohibited on ebay?

Thank you very much! I guess that is one album that I will not enjoy on vinyl. I'll look for the SACD instead. Thanks for an informed reply which probably has saved me some money that I can't afford to lose!

If you are in the market for the best bang for your buck SACD player, used Oppo DV-980H can be had on ebay for about $60 + shipping. It is also an excellent DVD player that supports both NTSC and PAL.

You have a big mailbox. :)
I was thinking about getting them, but I'm not sure whether to believe the hype that they'll rise in value.

There seems to be plenty of em, so i don´t think the value will increase in the nearest future, but they are nice releases well worth to buy:-)

Yes, the "sale hype" via ISIS magazine and website is that these kind of releases will "likely" not be pressed again after the first edition sells out.

I just bought a half-speed mastered Nashville Skyline on ebay. After the BOTT sold that cheaply recently, I wasn't going to let this one go!
