Went vinyl shopping this morning. Hit 5 different used shops in my area. I've never seen so many copies of Empire Burlesque in my life in one day! :D There wasn't much out there. But I was able to score the Biograph box set, in excellent condition, like new, for only 25 bucks. Hooray! Also picked up the sundazed Times.

I believe there's getting to be less out there, at least in good condition. Cursed 'vinyl revival.'

That Sundazed mono Times is quite nice. It's pressed on a big heavy slab of the kind that Dylan himself might appreciate.

If I was jonesing for Saved or Knocked out Loaded, I'd have really scored today.

All of the sundazed monos were at each of the shops--new. Still need to pick up the debut, another Side and Highway 61.

Shouldn't take long to find Saved. That may be more common than Burlesque.

I have Knocked Out Loaded on vinyl, but it's not that impressive, vs. the CD. Could be wrong, but it sounds like a 1980's digital recording, pretty cold.

My favorite (non bootleg) vinyl that I own is the fairly rare '6 eye' Columbia version of his first album. Only pressed for a short time with that old label, before the design switch to the 'two eye.'

Certain things like the mid 70's albums, still seem pretty plentiful, and Self Portrait seems to always appear in any bin of used Dylan vinyl. But things like Blonde On Blonde in playable condition are getting scarce, unless you want to open your wallet.

It's fun trying to track down all the used vinyls. Once a week this summer I'm heading out to check out the used bins. I am also enjoying the new copies of the sundazed monos--still need 3 of those. I've heard the sundazed Highway 61 isn't as good as the other (too quiet?). Anyone have the sundazed Highway 61?

Question--I assume that the newer records--Time out of Mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times--are all digitally recorded and then transfered to vinyl. So it's not a true analog sound. Is that indeed the case? If so--I have also heard from many, many people that Modern Times on vinyl sounds far better than it does on CD. Is that mostly due to the compression on the CD?

I think I've heard that Dylan has gone back to tracking in analog, now. I haven't bought Modern Times or Theft
on vinyl, so I can't comment on the sound. I do have Time Out Of MInd, and basically it sounds better than the CD, except for one of the records being pressed badly off center. Bothersome, if you're pitch sensitive.

The Sundazed Highway 61 isn't that good, compared to the others, it does seem mastered quiet. I'd just stick with the new mono CD. Or perhaps a vintage Columbia cutting, though my Columbia sounds a bit muddy. The Sundazed state cutting seems to restore a bit of treble energy, which may be the solid state cutting (opposed to tubes) or some other factor.

I would not agree. New vinyl seems sturdier, less prone to warping, & is packaged better. Long ago in the US, vinyl was often packaged in hard cardboard inner sleeves & wrapped in tight cellophane; some of these albums were scratched & warped before you even played them. I began springing for imports, which were wrapped in loose plastic. Today vinyl is packaged more sensibly. But for the most part old vinyl isn't bad. I do think they're making it a little better today.

They can make it better, I think that certain practices (like cutting) have evolved a little from 40 years ago. But the old stuff, when done well, was pretty good. Especially when you factor in the abuse of the old style record machines that tracked at 40 grams of pressure.

A good deal of today's vinyl comes out excessively noisy and with the same problems as before (warped, dished, pressed off center) so not much has changed, except that when pressing in small runs (in the 1000's max) and charging 30 bucks a pop, it's much more inexcusable. Decades ago, when vinyl the main medium and was selling by the billions per year, it's remarkable that as many of them were as good as they were.

Vinyl is a pretty finicky thing, at every step of the way.

Original "LAT" auction running out in a few hours. Note that if you scroll down it says they do ship outside Germany, and give the accurate postage information.

Half-speed master Nashville Skyline if anybody wants to grab it - it's definitely not mine, I'm keeping mine - just a heads-up.

I know I shouldn't be promoting other people's stuff, but this ends today and has no bids and is soooo worth it. ^^

So far I've collected 27 vinyl records (nothing past Empire Burlesque yet except Brandeis) and one of them is a Biograph sampler called Time Passes Slowly although "Time Passes Slowly" is not on the sampler!

Latest acquisition was a mint Dylan And The Dead - looks barely played, (which I guess you could also say might be true of the performances thereon). Chanced upon in a record market next to our hotel whilst in Perugia over the weekend.

10 euros, I laughed and handed over the note. The stall owner looked at me intently and simply said "Deeee-lan" .

Considering our friends at Flashback want 50 quid for it at present I consider it a sound investment, Mr Boy.

Although having just listened to it again I can confirm it is likely to remain almost mint.

Recently got Another Side and Bringing It All Back Home on vinyl, which I was very happy with.
I would really like John Wesley Harding and Street Legal on vinyl though too...My biggest regret was not buying Planet Waves for $10 from my main record shop, It's one of my favourites too, went to get it the next week and it was gone.
