If Dylan were to put out a best of live album what songs and versions would you want to see included? You can pick 12 songs and splice them together for a live package.

Just remember that including anything from the NET would violate truth in advertising laws.

That would be a very difficult task, JellyRoll.

I will start by including Visions of Johanna from Bergin, 2001. A truly eccentric performance.

"Sugar Baby" from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia February 9, 2002, highly recommended show available in the A-Z thread.. It's called Got A Line On You

Regardless of what Long Johnny thinks, just package up the 9 June 1998 Stockholm Concert. Sold.

I haven't heard a heck of alot of recent live Dylan, save for the four shows I've been to.

Out of those, there are so many great performances, but the one that blew me away the most was the first time I heard Nettie Moore live in Philadelphia, 2006.

Can't say it was his best, or even a good, performance of that song, 'cause I dunno....but it was a show stopper...the place went silent and the music was like a heartbeat....Bob with an unusually pleading endearment to his voice. It moved me.

They don't even have to be actuall performances, just songs that you would like to hear him interpret and play live with any band from 97-now.

I would like to hear

1. New Pony
2. It Takes Alot To Laugh
3. Highway 61
3. Brownsville Girl
4. Journey Through Dark Heat
5. Oh, Sister
6. Blind Wille McTell
7. Things Have Changed
8. Catfish
9. Precious Angel
10.Lily, Rosemary, and THe Jack of Hearts
11. The Mighty Quinn
12. Highlands

That would be a great live record.

I haven't got the date on me, but there's a version of Desolation Row from 2005 that is the best live version I've ever heard.

Glad you like it! It's one of my favorites. If there's one boot I could recommend you, it would be the Acoustic Compilation of '99. Incredible.

I really like that entire Berlin show, particularly "Can't Wait", which is different than any other version I've ever heard. Also, Tambourine Man, thanks for the recommendation. That Acoustic Compilation is a 4-disc set so it will take me a while to get to it... Looks great

I'm seeing polling material taking shape here. Dylan performs live better outside America because:

  • He sounds better in German
  • More bootleggers on the loose
  • Non-American audiences show more respect
  • Dylan actually hates America
  • Fewer drunk NET shouters
  • His keyboard is 220V so it works

Press here to see results.

Dylan did a jaw dropping MR. Tambourine Man in Seattle. I think it was in 2005, if not '05, '06?
One of the most stunning performances of the song ever. When the old Pool site was up, it was highly raved about.

I assume you mean Dublin 11/27 (there was no show on the 25th if Pagel is right).

Anyway, if I may say so, that is the best version of this song ever! I'm not kidding, I'm really not...

Desolation Row from Berlin 2003 is also, as another poster said, one of the seven wonders of the world, simply unbelievable.

Nicely chosen!

Yep, you're right. And it is a great version. Those last two Dublin shows were two of the best of the year IMO.

My other favorite TIFILWY comes from 11/12/06:

GREAT performance. Love the vocals. Love the groove.

Here's one of the best Senors I've heard from the same show. I was lucky to of been there...

Some gems I've enjoyed amidst the thrift store of the NET during this time frame:

Desolation Row 6-9-1998 Stockholm
Don't Think Twice 6-11-98 Copenhagen
John Brown 6-14-98 Bremen
Mama You've Been on My Mind 6-19-98 Brussels
Hard Rain 4-30-99 Vienna
Blowin' in the Wind 3-16-2000 Santa Cruz
Visions of Johanna 10-1-2000 Munster
Tangled up in Blue 2-1-2002 Sunrise
Sugar Baby 2-9-2002 Atlanta
Knockin' on Heaven's Door 4-7-2002 Oslo
Dignity 11-13-2004 Rochester
Tomorrow is a Long Time 4-15-2005 Boston
Dublin 11-27-2005 The whole show--even though my interest in live Dylan drops off significantly after 2000--I love this show.
