I like it too, but I've always liked Rage. A Bob version for comparison, from Rolling Thunder...

It kicks ass. I also got the 'oxford' reaction when cranking this one up for friends when it first came out.

Thanks for reminding of this irishbob. It might be the greatest Dylan cover that's out there.

I think at some level, a cover should, even if remotely, resemble the original enouh that it is recognizable. Its a tough thing to do as a band tries to put their stamp on it. Too close and "what's the point?" or worse yet, attempt to get too close but totally bomb. To remote and you get a WTF...

This attempt at Maggie's Farm does little to nothing for me.

Good thing Dylan didn't have that attitude when he took off on The Rolling Thunder Review 'covering' his own songs. Damn good thing.

Dylan's "covers", so to speak, have almost always been an improvement upon the originals and that is not only acceptable but preferable. Even with Budokan most everything he did was an imrovement over the original studio release.

However, I do make excepts for artists covering their own material. Nearly every song goes through a series of arrangements before the official release is chosen. Some of the arrangments overlooked or left on the shelf are excellent as well. I'm guessing some of the live arrangements we've heard through the years were just that... really good versions that at the time he felt were not as good as the ones he chose to release.

Well 'only one way' sounds chokingly restrictive, but this certainly was a WONDERFUL way!

Yeah, but if everyone followed your rule we wouldn't have this:

There are a few artists who on occassion can pull it off but it is still rare. People of similar talent and stature. The list pf artists that can pull it off is small.
