Tom Waits' last album was crap, eh?

I'd love to see Bob Dylan even come close to writing a 'Hell Broke Luce', a 'Pay Me' or a 'New Year's Eve', let alone perform them with an ounce of the same brio that Tom brings to them.

Dylan's a barnacle on the saggy arse of his own talent.

Keep up the good work, BB.

If the new Tom Waits album had been recorded before Orphans was released then that's where some of the songs would have ended up. Another disc might have been needed: Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers, Bastards & Boring Shite

Apart from Chicago which is ace

Jesus Christ of Manderlay how come you like Tom Waits above anything Dylan did in last 10 years? "Xmas in the Heart" is more fun than "Bad As Me". Tom Waits is OK, & "Bad As Me" is quite tiny little nice effort, but come on.

Dont be stupid. You have it in you to be better than this. Do your parents know you're this mental?

There is only one thing good about new Tom Waits' album. And it is its title... indeed bad as everything-Tom-Waits.

Waaaay off topic now guys!!

So back to it:
This is interesting!

http://www.bobdylanisis.com/Dylan%20Digest.htm

Quote:
Sources have indicated that Dylan went into the studio with members of his tour band in January and may have spent up to two months working on the album, though whether this refers to recording or recording and mixing is not clear. It has been rumoured that Dylan might have used an outside producer on the sessions! It has also been rumoured that Mark Knopfler may have joined Dylan in the studio. However, it is my understanding that Knopfler was mixing his own album in Britain at around this time. Make of all of this what you will; only time will tell.

Any time Mr. Dylan goes back into the studio, that's great news in my book.

Mr. Dylan can kick my a$s all around the block -- I don't care. He needs to stay in the studio 24/7 until he's done!

If an outside producer/collaborator other than Hidalgo was involved, could that person be Tom Waits? What was on Waits' schedule for January/February 2012? Do the Waits fans out there know?

No way.

He's turned into a house producer for the Rolling Stones, anyway.

That would be one hell of an album with T-Bone on board, however I think he had been recording with Elton John in the past few months

Just seen the Isis link on the front page saying there are rumors he worked with an external producer. Now that would be particularly exciting. He does seem to change direction every 3 albums or so and a new producer (new sound, new ideas) could be all that's needed after the last 3 self-produced records.

Yeah, which is why I think that he won't be on board for Bob's new album – too obvious.

Btw Jesse Dylan directed Tom Waits's new video.

I seem to remember there was a huge rumour that Waits was involved in "Love and Theft" before it came out. And another rumour about Patti Smith.

These kind of collaborations get thrown around every time we get the first whiff of a new album.

Having said that I think Bob will be co-composing with Franz Schubert on this next one.

I really hope its a more stripped down affair. He can't sing anymore so he should maybe try and utilise his voice more. Kinda like Gil Scott Heron did on his last album. Not exactly like that but a similar approach. He won't of course.

Somehow I doubt this will ever happen. In spite of the praise Johnny Cash got for his stripped down albums with Rick Rubin, Bob said he thought they were "second rate" - I can't remember exactly where he said that though.

Also, with his voice sounding like it is, I can't imagine it sounding great up against nothing but a soft acoustic guitar. I know everyone is sick of his albums being full of blues (I'm not - though sometimes all these blues songs blend into each other a bit) but it does suit the current state of his voice. When he moves outside the blues realm it draws attention to how ragged his voice really is cf. Christmas in the Heart - not that I haven't enjoyed CitH immensely every December since it came out.

Maybe he does not sing the way you want him to. I think that in reality he is simply getting closer to the way he always wanted to sing and sound.

I have said it before and I will repeat it here: Please listen to the ENTIRE WORKS of Charley Patton, Blind Willie Johnson and Howlin' Wolf. And I mean the ENTIRE WORKS. Then listen to Love & Theft, Modern Times, Together Through Life and Christmas In The Heart. I think it is impossible to fully understand and appreciate what Dylan is doing without having listened to at least the above three artists' works.

What Dylan is able to express WITH HIS VOICE in a song like "Forgetful Heart" for example, touches me more than everything he could do with his voice when he was a young man.
Dylan's current voice is perhaps the most human voice you will ever hear in Rock 'n' Roll.
A voice that comes from deep within an understanding of what it means to be living in world of darkness,
of what it means to be human.
The voice of a man who has stared the dark night of the soul in the face and who returned to tell the tale.
A voice that is ringing with the echoes of time, with the echoes of the greats and with the echoes of nameless ghosts.
A voice of truth.
The voice of a wise man, the voice of a great man.

If that ain't "singing" than I don't know what singing is.

What about a 3rd collab with Lanois?

I like what he did with Neil Young on Le Noise.
