Mere logic, there simply were more to chose from.

Could you tell me why please goombay? And also assure Trev that he had no involvement whatsoever in mass genocide.

not quite pro NET but pro BOB in his totality. i beleive if my memory is not too far gone, that bob met with him several times and gave him the credentials. he had an innate ability to understand all the different facets of dylonolgical studies, mastered them all. never would think of genociding anyone, but at the same had a good nose for the anti bob propaganda.

the title top british dylanist is currently vacant, it was recentely turned down, so it remains vacant.

Hmmmm - he is sounding as if he was a little bit genocidal!

Don't mention the genocide, Trev. This is a family channel.

Chris Hockenhull

I knew Chris back in the 90s - he was generous with his time and his abundant Dylan audio and video collection- a good guy who knows his stuff.

I supplied the tape of the Woodstock '94 show which was played prior to Merseyside Dylan's Robert Shelton talk - I've still got the signed copy of his book, and indeed of his review of the first 'Bob Dylan' album which he signed on the back of the covers famous review.

If he's reading this he'll know who I am.

Hmmmmmm.

Has anyone else ever walked out on a Dylan concert because they couldn't stand it?

Dublin 1993, the first date of the '93 tour.

I saw Bob ruffle his hairline from the wings before he came on as if he'd just got out of bed - which was probably true since the band was waiting in the wings for some 10 minutes or more before he showed.

The version of Maggie's Farm that followed was excruciating.

By the time of the acoustic set I'd had enough and retired to the bar for a beer.

Although the gig improved shortly thereafter, easily the worst I'd seen his Bobness.

This thread must be about a different consensus.

Trev - the fact that Chris is, and remains, Britain's Top Dylanologist is confirmed in a clip of "Look North" (or some other local TV channel) sometime in the 80's. Chris was interviewed on the programme and as he spoke the screen stated simply "Chris Hockenhull - Dylanologist"

I'm sorry - Lambchop was never a Dylanologist. He was a superfan who used to go to shows and shout "They Don't Deserve You Bobby". This would have been fine but he was shouting it at Hammesmith in 1991 so he clearly was mistaken. He later gave away his Dylan collection. I'm fairly sure that "The Chopper" ,as Dylan referred to him, died some years ago.

As far as I'm aware by reading his story online (I didn't know him), he sold things of his collection to pay for medical bills and/or go to live some nice place (I don't remember where) for his remaining time.

Here's my worthless .02 cents on the NET/MODBOB vs. Vintage Bob craziness (AKA Benny VS. Johanna :D )

I have lurked here a LONG time but I am a very new poster. Both Benny and Johanna are among my favorite posters, and believe it or not, they are more similar than they are different. It is obvious that they BOTH love BOB's music as much as anyone, anywhere. They both have a huge passion for this stuff. Different era's mind you, but it is still "Bob". And how can you not love someone who loves Bob so much?

And I "get" where both are coming from.
Johanna has great experiences seeing and listening to MODBOB. That's fantastic. I too have been to MODBOB shows and enjoyed myself immensely.

Benny is (in my opinion) a musical purist. He has heard the absolute best of what Bob has had to offer and latched on to it. Singing undue praises to anything less than the high water mark of the mid 70's (and lets throw 66 in there) diminishes just how truly magical those times were.

People say that the enjoyment of music is subjective. I believe that. I believe that someone like Johanna has every right to cherish and value her experiences with the NET. No different than Benny valuing RTR.

However, even with the personal subjectivity of music, I do believe that empirically there can be consensus on an artists "best" output. For example, Consensus among Deadheads is that May 1977 is probably the best month of consecutive Grateful Dead shows ever (always open to some debate, and there are other favorite era's (europe 72, fall 73, summer 74) but even advocates of other era's will rate May 77 near the top.

As much fun as I have had at MODBob shows (and I should also add I was at Toads Place in 90 and it was the greatest night of my life musically), I can state safely that the BEST music made in Bob Dylan's career from a Live performance Standpoint is RTR 75/76, it is not even close in my opinion. I would trade my attendance at Toads place for a spot in the Balcony in Waterbury 75, or Montreal, or Fort Worth, etc...etc... Other era's had incredible points and highlights, but nothing touches the sheer amount of incredible music being made on those 2 tours. They simply killed EVERY night!

Again, my .02....... And me saying 75/76 is the best does not diminish the experiences I had at Toads or supper club, just like Net'ers admitting 75/76 is best shouldn't diminish their NET experiences.

Plenty of Room on the RTR Express, everyone on board!!! it IS the best ever! :D

Mr. Pawnbroker is on the money here. I am in complete agreement. And you correct about the esteemed Sir Bennyboy, the British Royal Dylan expert. If one wants to experience Bob Dylan at his peak and most astonishing performances, the mid seventies are all you need. He we see the man at the top of his vocal power, and totally emotionally engaged. I've been immersing myself in some live RTR lately, and the experience has been totally transcendental. Driving around in my car, sunroof open, windows down, nice joint of high test, ready for liftoff. The electric songs, with numerous world class musicians backing him up, with unique arrangements, are other worldly. The way he hold notes and stretches out words, like in "It Ain't Me Bade", or "Idiot Wind", and evokes the emotions within these lyrics, is nothing less than the voice of God.
Thank you again Mr. Broker.

Let's say you are trying to introduce someone to live Dylan. It's not really even a question about whether you'd hand them Fort Worth 76 over Santiago 12...
I mean, let's be real about this. Good post Pawnbroker.

1) Clockwork Orange has the best sex scene of any film ever.

2) Sheffield '66 for acoustic, Manchester '66 for electric. Cut'n'shut best Dylan show before RTR came along. Sorted.

3) Lambchop was weird - passionate, but weird. Bob probably liked him because no matter how pissed or fucked up he got on stage, Larry still proclaimed him as God. He needed blinkered fans like that to see him through the dark ages of the early 90s.

4) CP Lee once gave me a Mexican death playing card in the pub. I kept it in my wallet for a while and one day it mysteriously vanished. About the same time as ModBob started getting really shite, actually.

Maybe you should go to Hop Farm for 'other reasons' and then just happen by the Bob stage to see what's really happening these days. Isn't it kind of in your region? The vids and recordings can't and won't ever capture the live experience. Nothing can except being there. Here's a chance to open the mind and just observe, expectation-free. Drink some beer and casually take in the scene.

Or I could just look a Hieronymus Bosch painting and punch myself in the ears repeatedly. Would be cheaper and more enjoyable.

You think I dont know what festivals are like? I worked at Glastonbury for 10 years and have been employed and also a punter at Reading, Latitude, Green Man and many smaller one dayers and free jobs. I've learned what makes a decent one and the corporate megastar walletrape clusterfucks dont make that list.

Hop Farm? Hahahahahahahahahahha. Fuck that for a game of soldiers.

No, I'll only be doing one this year - End Of The Road (http://www.endoftheroadfestival.com/)

Now, Dylan healdining a festival called that would at least guarantee a joke or two.

nobody has heard of chris, yet lambchop was given more than once private audience with bob.
bob himself recognized his earnestness. what are dylanologists but superfans anyways? i understand that this particular fact has begun to escape many in the blogger bin but such are the facts. they aint nuclear pharmacists.
as for the "collection" , lampchop had his dylanology inside him not in a collections. with the internet collections are a dime a dozen. i can get me a top 10 collection off the net in about an hour, but lampchop dylanolgy is unique.

if your friend chris would like to apply he would have to stand in line with everybody else. we go at least 2 bloggers who apparentley know more about bob today than aj ever did. them we have remasterer who found master 8 track tapes for h61 which was recorded on 4 track. these are some doozy resumes hes up against.

him and bob were buddies, thats why the powers that be wanna tear him down.

Either you got lots of money to burn on auction sites, or your collection consists exclusively of sound recordings.

money is no object on the path down the golden road that leads to top dylanist status. dylanism in not in some collection but in the way you carry yourself.
