How do you rank Dylan's albums from Time Out of Mind through Tempest?

Here's my ranking...

1. Time Out Of Mind
2. Modern Times
3. Tempest
4. Love & Theft
5. Together Through Life

Time out of Mind & Love and Theft switch places constantly, same with Tempest and Modern Times.

TOOM
T(empest), because in a strange way it's more coherent than...
...L&T
MT
TTL
CITH

Rank may change, of course. Even TTL is great. CITH would be the only X/Christ-mas album I could devour. Heard just the snippets, ultimate Weihnachtsmann voice. :-)

I'd give the first three 5 stars, the next two 4, and the last one 3.

3 masterpieces, one strong album, one decent one, and one Christmas album.
L&T and TOOM are interchangeable for me.

The top four are so close that they're very difficult to distinguish between at moments. Nearly every moment, every nanosecond is incredible (for studio releases, anyway) and there are moments when the order shifts so its a little bit fluid...

Modern Times is good and has moments of greatness. And some moments that don't shine as much.

Together Through Life was really intersting the first couple of times through nut less so with each spin. Beyond Here Lies Nothing holds up but as time goes on the NET performances so surpass most of the rest of the songs in a way that the studio release doen't feel necessary.

My rankings:

Love and Theft
Time Out of Mind
Modern Times
Together Through Life
Tempest

LAT and TOOM are very close, and there's a considerable gulf between these two albums and the remaining three. LAT wins due to the production. I prefer Jack Frost to Daniel Lanois. TOOM is too muddled, and I don't like how Dylan's voice is manipulated.

Together Through Life comes in fourth, because the strength of Beyond Here Lies Nothing, Forgetful Heart, This Dream of You, and I Feel a Change Comin' On.

The difference between Together Through Life and Tempest is that Together Through Life becomes richer with repeated listening. Soon After Midnight, Long and Wasted Years, Tempest, and Roll On John each had a certain novelty. Whether it was a new, unfamiliar sound or a special meaning, this novelty wears off in Tempest with time.

Time Out of Mind - my all time fave
"Love and Theft" - this album invented a whole new thing that can never be recreated
Christmas in the Heart - a total treasure
Modern Times - another great album with a bounty of unreal tracks
Tempest - "Long and Wasted Years," among others, blows me away
Together Through Life - "I Feel a Change Comin' On" and "This Dream of You" are standouts for me on this one

Time out of Mind
Tempest
Love & Theft

other two are tied for fourth

right now I'm on modBob strike; I can't listen to any of it for some reason. I'm sure it will pass. Must have been that unbelievably stoopid Rolling Stone interview.

I hate to do this because it feels like I'm picking a "worst" when it's still good.

Love & Theft
Modern Times
Time Out of Mind
Tempest
Christmas in the Heart
Together Through Life

Maybe it's time for a second lifetime achievement award?

1. "Love And Theft"
2. Time Out Of Mind
3. Tempest
4. Modern Times
5. Together Through Life
6. Christmas In the Heart

There's no doubt IMO that TOOM and L&T are Dylan's best "recent" albums. Right now I think L&T is the best of them, but on other days I prefer TOOM.
The post-L&T albums are all IMO inferior to TOOM and L&T, but they all have their moments. Even CITH. I like at least parts of all of them and I'm grateful Dylan still thinks it's worth the effort to write, record and release new music. It's not like he needs the money, owes us anything or needs to write more songs.
