I should never have watched the Cameron movie. Doing a cover of the Edmund Fitzgerald? Gordon Lightfoot nailed that one, didn't he? I've seen a couple of pics of Gordon Lightfoot and Dylan together somewhere. Anyone know the ones I'm talking about? I remember a big furry hat.

Of course, as we know, Bob used to do a lovely cover of Gordon's "I'm Not Supposed to Care".

Bob knows how to pick 'em!

Let me ask a question. This board is filled with endless speculation about Tempest; we've had (bogus?) advanced reviews, we've had (bogus?) lyrical transcriptions, we've had descriptions both explicitly hypothetical and putatively based on 'insider' info, etc., etc. My question is - is any of this likely to enhance your actual enjoyment of the album? Or is it more likely to get in the way of your enjoyment (or, perhaps better, your honest response to the album) by creating reams of specific expectations and prior assumptions (red tape, in effect) that will then have to be untangled and overcome before you can engage the album on its own terms?

I ask, because I for one prefer to wait for the album itself and let it do its thing, rather than develop these elaborate anticipatory edifices that the album then has to confront. I'd rather hear Bob's new music, period, than hear it as filtered through all this pre-existing stuff. Am I alone in this?

Isn't that the old traditional folk song about the titanic? Nice one.

I started scrapping up past forums about other new releases. It's a wonder why this one is 21 pages long already while others were 5 or 6 pages long.

 It's what makes us Expecting Rain.

Well back in those days people used to start several threads when a new album was to be released. things are muuch different today.

No pilgrim you're not alone! I stand by you in your quest... I don't even like reading real reviews until I've heard the music!

Well, yes, you have a point.
No doubt through a forum like this, there's a
lot that irritates. I think it's the static of
obsession/preoccupation that gets deposited
on Expectingrain. (Expectingtempest, in this case)

However, when the record comes out, testimony
to the musician about whom all this is, the music
will wash away all the waffle with its first 4 bars.
That's the way it is for me, anyhow.

Hear! Hear!
Why should I read how anybody else feels about something before I've heard it myself?
Please let me make up my own mind.

I like to read other people's opinions and input. Sometimes I learn something - often, in fact.

I agree with LP 100%. I will wait to hear the entire thing; I definitely will avoid snippets. It ruins the experience, for me.

However, I do enjoy reading about the enthusiasm that people here have for the new album. And the discussion about the status used on the album cover was interesting.

HOWEVER
I think the “fake” reviews and the “fake” lyrics are just another form of trolling. A complete waste of time. WTF anyway?

It's called "humour". A humour bypass is not, contrary to what some folks believe, a prERequisite for ER membERship.

With respect, Supermabel1, "humor" and "trolling" are not equivalent.

Here is a quote from Mr. Hal Jones, dated 03/06/2012:

"2.) Trolling:
This is when members deliberately try to antagonize or criticize others to get a reaction, frequently by posting incorrect information, posting blatantly stupid questions, wisecracking, or other nonsense. If you note this behavior, please do not “feed the trolls” by responding in the thread. Obvious trolling behavior is considered a serious offense."

Just saying, as they say.

All new albums are released on a Monday in the UK, so "Tempest" will be released on 10 September. Same with "Love and Theft" which came out on 10 September in the UK.

Oh, I agree with this - otherwise I wouldn't bother with forums like this at all. What I'm talking about is having so much advance 'information,' opinion, and commentary that you can't really approach the album unencumbered by all that stuff - either the surprise factor is compromised by the info that was accurate, or the experience of discovery becomes defined in part by the collision between other peoples' received expectations and the actual thing itself. While you can never approach any work of art (or indeed anything) de novo, with absolutely no preconceptions at all, I'd really prefer not to have reams of ER speculations and/or misdirections and/or spoilers bouncing around my noggin as I sit down and grapple with Tempest.

But as for discussing the ACTUAL album and its contents, hey, I'm all over that. I just want to experience it first.

I'm in agreement LP. In fact, I have even thought of avoiding Tempest threads until September. Especially when it will be released a few days earlier outside of the US. I don't want to hear details........I want to be undefiled 8)

Woah! Back up there. I have to agree with troubs when he says "If I couldn't count on these threads being devoid of any real substance I would avoid them". The only substance here is what Dylan and Sony are prepared to let you know. Everything else is conjecture, wishing n hoping, bullshitting and ... gad! humour. Not trolling, mate, but someone 'aving a larf. I would certainly hope that Mr Hal, if he were still in moderator garb, would see that this ain't "members deliberately try[ing] to antagonize or criticize others to get a reaction", 'cos it's clear to me this ain't so. Seriously, and with respect Mr Svoboda, aren't you being ... erm, a little too serious here? :D

I'm sure that's '75 on your mind, the Rolling Thunder passing fleetfoot over Toronto and Neuwirth allegedly almost setting Gordon's house alight by throwing his jacket on the fire.

I know which ones, because I looked them up on Google Images, using Bob Dylan Gordon Lightfoot as a search query. :P

Bob in his furry hat.
