I live by one rule... and one rule only!... I never, ever trust anyone with the name Bumstead... the name itself is quite upsettingly vulgar!... I am not evening comfortable typing the name!

I thought I knew that name from somewhere. These are words to live by.

"I, Bumstead."

Yes, Alan was particuarly enamoured with Dylan use of intertextuality in the title track comparing the dismantling of a Corby trouser press with the sinking of RMS Titanic.

A splendid review, brilliant.
Almost as funny as the people who consider it to be real.
One of the best spoof reviews ever!

I have no doubt the review is fake, though I agree with others it sounds fascinating. I think if it is real, he didn't pay much attention to "Pay In Blood" cause Rolling Stone has too much to lose to lie.

The back cover looks like it was photoshopped about as quickly as the front cover, probably by Bumstead himself. The UPC has no numbers. The labels are hilarious. If Bob let any labels that stupid looking sneak through then it would be a sign that the cover is clearly intended to be ironic, which I"m not fully convinced is the case.

All these quotes about "it is something you've never heard from Dylan before" make me think it will be about as much of a departure as TTL was.

What I found most interesting, though, was the description of "Long and Wasted Years" as being a song about Dylan's relationship with his fans where he rhymes his own name. Bob doesn't care enough about us (thank God) to attempt something so silly. At least I hope not....., but it belies the one fear I have about this album.

The Lennon "tribute."

Lennon was not Bob's favorite Beatle. George was. I don't think he particularly liked John. "Pneumonia Ceilings" was poking fun at John's seriousness a bit, and "Fourth Time Around" is an all-out dis. If Bob and John were contemporary rappers, that would be the death blow in their feud. And Dylan has covered more than "Nowhere Man;" in 2001 I heard him play "Fourth Time Around" and then segue into "Norwegian Wood" at the end, confirming their connection. Lennon was obviously pretty fed up with Bob too, not only saying that he "didn't believe in Zimmerman," but going so far as to record "Serve Yourself" in '79. I do think, though, that Bob writing a tribute to Lennon is a 60s nostalgia wet dream. It is the kind of thing casual fans have wanted Dylan to do for years. I am worried that he may, for some reason, have tried to please them with this album.

You know, I enjoy a bit of fun as much as the next guy or girl.

Expecting Rain is a great, informative site, one of the very, VERY best -- a real home and haven for lovers of Bob’s music.

So, that being said, if this “review” is a bunch of BS, as it seems to be, then frankly, it’s not funny. It’s not right and it’s a big waste of time. We should be better than this.

Just my opinion tho’.

The review is completely genuine. Alan is hopefully bringing his Pre-release copy to my house this evening and we will listen and discuss over a few beers.

The only obvious joke in the review was:

Quote: What may come as a relief to many fans, is that there’s no 12 bar blues here.

This is clearly a fabrication.

Bennyboy would never write this kind of thing, or play these kind of tricks on people. NEVER HAS, NEVER WILL!

He certainly wouldn't submit this to Isis, either.

I knew the review was fake - all I had to do was glance at his comments about "Early Roman Kings". I have a journo friend who actually has heard the album and he was most taken with that particular track.

Apparently "Early Roman Kings" is a throwback to "All the Tired Horses" on Self Portrait. Bob doesn't sing on the track at all. It's got a girl chorus, and for five minutes we get gently plucked strings while the chorus intones: "O the early Roman kings / They did such naughty things".

Another one full of crap

Dylan's had plenty of good things to say in the past about Lennon, including this :
http://www.lettersofnote.com/2010/11/bo ... -stay.html
And in 1992, he raves about Lennon to Elliot Minz - "amazing sense of melody, and lyrically no slouch either", "so quick-witted", "he sang great", "he was just a wonderful guy, really", "speaking as a musician, he was someone to look up to".

And friends at certain times. I read Cynthia Lennon's memoir 'John' a few years ago and was surprised that whilst in the UK, Dylan and Joan Baez stayed with the Lennons. Would have been 64 or 65.

I thought so.

But why does it say "Written and Performed by Bob Dylan"? Is he pulling a Prince on us and playing everything himself?

well there you go, that's as good a clue as any since we know (what's his name) Hidalgo played on the album. Didn't the press release also say something about recording with his touring band?

Well, if it's real its a wild take on whatever is on that album. If it isbn't real then its a fairly successful piece of satire to inspire so much conversation.

I put nothing past Bob- Anything he does won't surprise me... unless it doesn't surprise me. lol

This thread is incredible. A testament to the fact that people on this board can discuss, in detail, anything, with total commitment and openness. I just love this place, I really do. :)

Hear hear!

I think my favorite part of this thread is the angry yelping about this review "wasting people's time," as if endlessly sitting and speculating about an unreleased record album could be anything but!

Entertaining rubbish from start to finish. :D

It mostly seems like the guy has dreamt of hearing the album. I don't believe it because:

1) There's too many different crazy things to be done by Bob in one single album.
2) Other things mentioned are too obvious and easy to imagine.
3) Why should they give him a promo copy (and not to me 8) ) and even let him be the first to review it?

Anyway, a good exercise of imagination.

And it made me think of what would have we thought with an early review of any of the other Dylan's albums. Can You imagin it on Selfportrait or Slow train coming?

There were even lines about a certain bovine poster, known to be seen in the first row, dancing her little heart out.... even before the music has started  She wants to see my what?1?!?!?! Too bad it didn't make the cut.... can you imagine what that album art might have been....

yea i quickly skimmed it so i didn't get the over-the-top-ness of it - all it thought was oh great, concept album - bob has shown us his k-nk great.

later i had time to read the rest of it.

but hey i hope it gets him kudos from his hipster scene, helps his writing work, he knows how to make fun of it all, so that's good.

I wonder if Regimond Barclay and the guy who's been impersonating Paul McCartney since 1967 have ever met.
