You want to know why I still come here, why I take the stance I do?

Does it get any better than that?

Benny, you're a love! I haven't any audio on this computer but will listen to it in the other room while I'm ironing. :)

Exquisite, aint it? Something in the tone of the voice, that keening, aching, sweet melancholy...you can almost touch it....makes the soul shudder...never reached those heights again,

Check out this '66 live rendition of To Ramona, Benster. It's a pisspoor audience recording, true, but to hear the ghostly beauty of the '66 acoustic voice applied to To Ramona is just...I have no words.

I'm in complete agreement. This was the peak era of Bob Dylan live - no question about it. He was also doing a superb electric, very upbeat, voice stretching version of "It Aint Me Babe" then, that I recently found and can't get enough of. And Benny, to make this thread complete, please supply a link to the live "Idiot Wind" you have posted before, which you described as "the greatest artistic achievement, by anyone, ever".

The reviewer at RockPeaks says it perfectly:

The reason God made music is because sentiments like this cannot be conveyed with words alone. Nor can these words touch what this performance is. In one of Dylan’s most effective mergings of music and words, “Idiot Wind” may be in a class by itself, by a songwriter in a class by himself.

Here's a performer in his live-performance prime delivering a stop-in-your-tracks rendition of a fresh flower (from the just-bloomed “Blood On The Tracks”) –– and this is just boiling over with a hothead’s blasting temper, every consonant articulated for maximum scolding, the performance painfully evoking the wound the song was written from, in turns soulful, pleading and pissed-off.

This was really the apex of Dylan’s live performances. Shortly afterward he began radically rearranging some songs and intentionally mumbling through others to where they were nearly unrecognizable. Although he wore masking makeup on the Rolling Thunder stage, he wasn’t yet masking his songs, and this “Idiot Wind” comes through as clear as a standing face-to-face dress-down from your best friend. Which isn’t even addressing that he's looking positively Biblical just before he went born-again JeSuessical.

On Rolling Thunder, Dylan had a different line-up virtually every night, and some shows almost every song. What’s nice here is that the band’s stripped down to a hard-rock quintet –– which for this tour might be called uncluttered –– and for this song, it’s called perfect.

NBC’s camerawork is also praiseworthy. For once there’s a tight static close-up of the singer delivering the song, and not some Fellini wannabe directing us to faces in the crowd. There may not be any better footage of this composer’s razor fangs than this performance.
