It's not the time to for jabs and eye-rolling. The whole forum just got 50% dumber and a lot less human in the past hour. Be nice to mourn it a little.

playing songs from the 60s and 70s and songs recorded in the 2000s but with a musical basis in the music of the first half of the century is perfectly acceptable and good

one should view it, though, as a homage to the music of those times rather than something really "current"
when one listens to bob's music, whichever part of it one likes, one is listening into the past rather than into the future

my tastes are completely irrelevant; you're being deliberately difficult by saying something like that
bob dylan is no longer culturally relevant as an object of anything other than nostalgia - however, this isn't a bad thing. neither is tolstoy, shakespeare, mozart, you name it.

So what are we mourning here? And how have we suddenly become 50% dumber, and a lot less human? Sounds overly dramatic. Has Stephen Hawking been banned again?

I wasn't eye-rolling, I was shaking my head in disbelieve of the ignorance prevalent in this place. If Bob isn't relevant now, he never was. He's not a nostalgia act. As he himself has said, "Nostalgia is death." If he was nostalgic, he'd get a band to perfectly reproduce the sounds of those years that might sell best to most people, whatever they are. You (TMM) judge him saying it's not 2012 music, I mean who are you to judge? You'd rather he stopped playing? He happens to be alive and willing to perform, so what in your opion, or anyone's opinion here, should he be doing differently?

if he's not a nostalgia act, why doesn't he write a bunch of new songs and play only those? playing songs from the 60s and 70s at all is an act of nostalgia, in one form or another. i said before that there's nothing wrong with this in itself. you are perfectly welcome (and right, really) to listen to music from a time other than now. but you should admit that that's what you are doing, and not pretend that bob is still the razor-sharp up-to-the-minute socially relevant laserbeam that he once was.

as for my opinion on what he should do, i reckon he should stick to his radio show! it's really good, and imo achieves much more than his last few albums.
some more books would also be ace

i don't presume the right to tell him what to do; i do, however, always reserve the right to not enjoy what he is doing and say that i don't like it (democracy blah blah free speech blah blah)

i also don't really appreciate either side of this debate calling the other ignorant, deaf, retarded, insane, or anything else along these lines. it's not unnecessary and i wish that everybody would stop it.

Oh, so it's the old songs now that are not relevant anymore? Was there any time he ever (like, ever) did that, only performing new material? Let me think - once! 1979. So.... why was It Ain't Me Babe more relevant in 1975 than it is now? He took Joan Baez on the RTR - he invited her. Ah, the nostalgia....

yes, there is nothing about any of dylan's work that is relevant to 2012 in the same way that things made in 2012 are
it is relevant in 2012 in the same way that any great art from history is, though

oh gimme a break the RTR thing was a huge nostalgia fest! they literally got all the folkie social protesty people and put them all together on the one stage
the difference is that i enjoy listening to that tour whereas the recent stuff just doesn't make me happy to hear

and playing songs within a year or two of when they were written is pretty different from playing songs that were penned half a century ago

Please Don't go BB. Hope you are just having a bad day and will feel differently tomorrow. I know I am new here and I don't always agree with you but I savour your posts. The sharpest on here IMO. The post you wrote earlier explaining how the changes in voice make you feel was a masterpiece as MMD and others said. You contribute hugely to this forum unlike some people who just uncritically bang the same drum without seeming to take in the nuance of other peoples opinions. :(

Really now, what is the difference? Ain't Me was over a decade old at RTR time, and if that song isn't still relevant, I don't know what is. ER proves on a daily basis that it is. He should start doing Hero Blues again....

Please define "real 2012 music".

I hope Benny will stick around. I'm not sure what's prompted him to bow out but the forum simply would not be the same without him.

Nope. And "bowing out" or "leaving" aren't accurate descriptions.
