Does anyone know how Tony Garnier got the job in the Bob Dylan band? He must have joined just after Oh Mercy?
Thanks

He was at first hired to fill the place of Kenny Aaronson, who had to return to the US during the 1989 tour of Europe to have surgery (a skin tumor, IIRC). Dylan was so happy with Garnier that he decided to make him a permanent member of the touring band.
After GE Smith left the band in late 1990, the late César Diaz became the band leader. Diaz noticed that Garnier as a more senior member of the band was better paid than he was and said that Garnier should be the band leader. Garnier became the band leader in early 1991 and he's been the band leader ever since.
Diaz talked about this in an interview with ISIS in the late 90's.

Almost all of my letters to Tony begging for a job in the band have been returned unopened... almost all... the first two or three he ran through a shredder first.

Tony is freakin' powerhouse, a machine. A smiling machine. The longest serving Dylan band member on record. Give it up for Tony!

ive had the pleasure of talkin with tony and stu for quite a long time.. we must have stood outside yakkin for over two hours. I had no idea who they were, but they impressed me as two of the nicest people id ever met..and i left them thinking i had met two new friends. They both shook my hand and gave me their names, and that is when i knew i had better do some homework and find out more. Imagine how i kicked myself when i found out.. and i could only laugh and laugh... That is what brought me to this site. Me, researching the band.
Now i cannot stay in the far back of the venue and merely listen..i have to see them. Ive made every effort to be up front since then and have met more fabulous real dylan folk there than those that just get a ticket because they have nothing better to do that day..or win them by accident on a station or giveaway .. those people dont know the songs 99% of the time and they are no fun to sit next to. Give me the rail Anyday! 8)

His travel expenses are paid and he gets a free soundboard CD of every show...

He doesn't ask for much.

(Rumor has it he is Bob's official biographer when Bob moves on to the heavenly gig. That may pay him pretty handsomely.)
