Friends,
I'm listening to all the records I have of artists playing Dylan to get lists of
*better than Dylan's*
*never by Dylan*
*rockier than Dylan*
(this last category is the most important, to me, as I'd like to add a *punk dylan* (so as to say) section in our show.
(stuff a la desolation row-chemical brothers, sweet marie-jason or dylan himself in hard rain)

so the question is:
what are in your opinion the best dylan covers you've ever heard?

I really dig Glen Hansard's cover of You Aint Goin' Nowhere
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgrn77geQJU

IMO better than Bob's version (especially when performed live)

Joan Baez - simple twist of fate. Not as good as any Bob version I have heard but she does a wonderful imitation of Dylan in one of the verses.
Most of the Byrds covers were very good as well.

I heard a wonderful version on the wireless of You're Gonna Make me Lonesome When You Go - it was 2/3 years ago and a female singer, but I never found out who it was.

I love Andrew Bird's version of Oh Sister, though I've never heard anyone else mention it...

Chris Whitley has done a bunch of Bob covers, my favorite being Spanish Harlem Incident...

There is a cd "Chimes Of freedom " put out by amnesty international which has Dylan covers by a variety of artists , so far what I have heard is very good.

I’m no Eddie Vedder fan but I think his performance of Masters Of War during the 30th anniversary concert is truly superb.

I also love The Wailers completely revamped version of Like A Rolling Stone (sung by Bunny):

Madeleine Peyroux does good with 'You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go' from her 2004 album "Careless Love".
Uncle Earl doing "Wallflower" from their 2007 album "Waterloo, Tennessee" is pretty good as well.

It is a tough ask when you think how many singers and groups over the last fifty years have covered at least one Dylan song either live or on record. One of the best I ever heard live was a young lad busking at a Sunday market last year. He did a brilliant version of " Mr. Tambourine Man".

Eliza Gilkyson has a live version of 'Jokerman' on the compilation album "A Nod to Bob on His 70th Birthday".

I probably posted this in one of the earlier "covers" threads. But it's well worth posting again - The Persuasions: The Man In Me.

I'm a big fan of this one as well. Also Tracy Chapman at that show does a great The Times They Are A-Changin'.

I like The White Stripes version of One More Cup of Coffee from their first album. I absolutely adore Dylan's version of course, but the White Stripes do a cool version of the song that has a different feel to it. A nice change of pace sometimes.

The Byrds covered a lot of Dylan songs very well of course.
