I still love Rod Stewart's versions of Tomorrow is a Long Time, Girl from the North Country and Mama You Been On my Mind.

But I knew them long before I liked Dylan's music so maybe that's why...

Visions of Johanna by Joan Baez is simply mesmerizing and normally I don't even like listening to her.

I was just going to reply to your Visions post how very weird I find it that she'd cover Sad-Eyed Lady of all songs. Though covering Visions would have been weird, too.

I find her version very stunning and cherish it because Bob didn't give us any alternative renditions unfortunately

If Dylan`s opinion is important then the cover that impressed him the most was when Elvis did a cover of Tomorrow Is A Long Time.

Joan Baez double album "Anyday Now" is great.

I'll second that with special mention of her doing "Love is just a 4 letter word" which she claims Bob said he didn't even remember writing!

But..my all time favorite cover goes to a superb blues artist, and fellow New Englander, Susan Tedeschi. She does a heart stopping version of "Don't Think Twice". There's a numerous versions of hers out there, but the best one is a live studio one she did some years back for a Boston radio station, 92 The River. It has a haunting piano lead in the background which takes it to a whole new level. If anyone can find that one, and post a link to it here, I have a free and superb Bob Dylan poster for you.

Yes, like some others on this thread, cast my vote for both the Madelaine Peyroux and Miley Cyrus versions of "Your Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go". I am also fond of Joan Osborne's version of "Man In a Long Black Coat". Have always thought the early Rod Stewart versions "Only a Hobo" and "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" have held up well in the ensuing years. The one that always hits me though is a very simple one- George Harrison's take on "If Not for You"- a 'simple' song done with a telling and lasting simplicity for my ears.

I recently got the Amnesty album. If I had to pick my absolute favorites off of there they'd be these...

The Silversun Pickups - Not Dark Yet
My Morning Jacket - You're A Big Girl Now
Adele - Make You Feel My Love
Maroon 5 - I Shall Be Released (I know, I was shocked too)

For the record though. The only cover I've ever heard of a Dylan song that I'd say was better than Dylan's original would be Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower"...several others are either just as good, or almost as good, but never better.

I'm amazed no-one has mentioned Mark Lanegan, "Man In The Long Black Coat".
Also I'd second the Jim James/Calexico "Goin to Acapulco" mentioned earlier.
And an honourable mention to Fairport Convention's version of "If You Gotta Go" which for reasons best known to themselves was translated into French-"Si Tu Dois Partir"- always thought that was a strange thing for a band rooted in English folk music to do...
