For me Visions of Johanna stands out. The live 66 and the blonde on blonde versions are night and day imo. It doesn't get much better then the live 66 version, but I think he ruins it on BOB, with the electric instruments and what not, he loses the effect of the song. I think it was meant to be played solo acoustic.

Any others?

Anything performance of a song from the NET whose original was recorded prior to the NET...

Its All Over Now, Baby Blue being the lone exception... The Rolling Thunder Revue shows are the definitive performances for that.

Well ... Isis, where on the record it's an engaging run through. And then it's flat out fantastic in Montreal.

But what about Woodstock '94 or any of the great '95 versions?

True! And I should have entertained the thought of the thread a little more. The original release of Its All Over Now, Baby Blue does not compare to any of these... I was thinking definitive versions/performances...

Sorry.

The songs on what used to be side 2 of the "Hard Rain"-Lp, with Idiot Wind standing out.
In fact, all songs on that album are great.

The studio version of Abandoned Love pales next to the live version.
It's not even fair to compare them.

Forgetful Heart has to be mentioned. And the jazzy rearrangement of "Tryin To Get To Heaven".

I was gonna say that, but I've never heard a studio version of that song. I can't imagine any version being superior to the Live 66 version which is my favorite song on Live 66.

Three here.

The only exception I'd stand for is MObile, which is so great also in the BoB version, too.
The harp in the beginning being the best Bob Dylan harp ever, to my ears.

For the rest, yes, all the tracks out of Hard Rain are better than the originals.
Idiot Wind, Shelter, Threw It and 12Many as forerunners.
