Expecting Rain

I just ordered this a few minutes ago. Now begins the waiting period for it's arrival. In the meantime I thought I'd let the anticipation build by asking all you Dylan fans what you think of the Doc?

Did you get the Blu-ray version? I've got the DVD. I'd get the blu-ray if it's any better quality.
And it's a great documentary. I'm surprised you haven't seen it yet.

The one with the '65 Revisited bonus DVD? That one paints a much nicer portrait of Bob than DLB does.

In fairness to my lateness of getting this. I find all Dylan essential to my music collection at this point, and unfortunately I have limited funds so I can't get everything all at once. Recently got a new job though and I'll be able to complete my Dylan CD/DVD collection in the next few months. I'll probably get Chronicles Vol. 1 and Tarantula too. I'm not gonna bother with every Dylan DVD, but I do still want to get "The Other Side of the Mirror"..."Dylan Speaks: The Legendary 1965 Press Conference"..."Unplugged"...and "Masked and Anonymous"

Essential, for sure! I'm excited for you! I am the same, rolling_thunder......I can only buy a little at a time, but I am chipping away at 50 years worth of treasures. How lucky are we to have so much to look forward to!! I have bought a lot of my things used on Amazon. You'd be surprised at how cheap some things are and most everything I have bought has been like new and some of them, although sold as used, have been brand new and still sealed. Enjoy!!!

Definitely do get Chronicles, and get it in English as Bob wrote it.
Also, M&A and the M&A soundtrack.
And Renaldo & Clara.
Buy Tarantula used, cheap, you'll probably only ever read it once.

Alan Price manages to come off better than Donovan... amazing really, considering which is the bigger c**t. As a documentary of someone who is very unhappy and is insulating themselves from the world with smack and speed (whilst being filmed) it works well, for the butterfly that emerged from that particular cocoon watch 'Eat The Document'... yes it is 'essential' but he was a very snotty x too; hardly surprising considering the company he kept.... If Joanie-baby kissed my ass like that I'd have her 'offed'

best line in the movie? "give the anarchist a cigarette".

Speed, perhaps, but smack, on that tour? Don't see that, not in the film, anyway.

That is a bit of a stretch I reckon. Who here can honestly say
they have read it through to the end? No fibbing.

Is Renaldo and Clara available anywhere. I've looked it up on Amazon a few times, it never yields any results unfortunately. I'd buy it in a second if I could find it.



Indeed you and I are some of the newest to the party here it seems, but we're catching up pretty rapidly it looks like. I've got almost all of Bob's albums and the next time I get paid I'm getting at least 3 more. I kinda wanna throw in Jack White's Blunderbuss and a Mark Lanegan album, just to mix it up.

Greil Marcus & The Tragics is about all, I suspect. Certainly not Dylan.

I have most of the studio albums, too....and Biograph, Greatest Hits 3, and several of the Bootleg Series. Masked and Anonymous is definitely something you should get when you are able. I also highly recommend Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid. I haven't purchased that yet, but I watched it several times on Netflix.

I have been trying to work in new music, too, but it's hard with so much Bob material that I am consumed with hearing.

BTW, you inspired me to go watch Don't Look Back again. I watched the second disc this evening

This may be stating the obvious, but just in case here goes:

It is my understanding that Don't Look Back is significant not
only because of the extraordinary insight into that period of
Bob Dylan's life, but also because it is - if I recall correctly -
the first cinema verite documentary of its type.

Perhaps a cinephile will correct me on that; perhaps it is
the first relating to contemporary music. In any event,
is is a very significant film per se, even leaving aside
its tremendous importance to a fan of Bob Dylan.

At a simple level, I am fascinated by the fact that people
back then were much less aware of the significance of a film
camera; so they often didn't really react or ''play up'' to the
fact that filming was going on. Bob Dylan, on the other hand,
seems acutely aware of its power.

In this regard, it is fascinating to see various instances of
where still photographs are taken in that old fashioned way
where the subjects pose and there is flash technology from
a distinctly earlier photographic era.

As a piece of living history, It is nothing short of astounding.

With the San Francisco Press Conference in between. Then listen to a NET boot, and cry.

i think i like No Direction Home more than Don't Look Back.

i have yet to see Eat The Document though. i plan on getting to that soon.

Still remains to be seen for me. I do thoroughly enjoy No Direction Home though, I've had it for a while now. My Don't Look Back DVD is expected to arrive Monday, I can't wait!!!

Don't Look Back is an over-rated drag. Except perhaps the "Baby Blue" hotel room scene. Of course, the SHB cue-card scene is good, too, but who hasn't seen that a thousand times already? Mostly, Bob comes across as an obnoxious jerk, and the stage performances are tired and uninspiring. Grossman and that psychophant Neuwirth are jerks, too. Essential viewing, nonetheless. Get it...watch it...and put it on the shelf for the rest of your life. That's what I did.

Eat the Document is much more interesting to see, even though it's a real technical mess. If you don't love Bob Dylan, you'd never make it past the ten minute mark.
