Patti Smith , Cat Power, The Byrds, Richie Havens, Jeff Buckley have all done a fair number of great Dylan covers most of which are relatively well known. I can jot down a list if you'd like.

Here is one that's perhaps a little more obscure:

Townes Van Zandt - Colorado Girl / Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues

Glad you liked it Raging! TVZ is a much too underappreciated singer/songwriter.

Here is one that I happened to catch one day courtesy of the lovely folks at DylanRadio.com

Magokoro Brothers - My Back Pages

Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

I really need to get some Townes albums. I don't have any and I love everything I have ever heard by him.

I just ran across this one tonight which I rather enjoyed.

Masters Of War - The Staple Singers

I suppose you meant Them with Van Morrison. Great one.

I still love Rod Stewart's versions of Tomorrow is a Long Time, Girl from the North Country and Mama You Been On my Mind.

But I knew them long before I liked Dylan's music so maybe that's why...

The young Rod also did Only A Hobo. My preferred is Tomorow Is A Long Time. Would have been my "Never by Dylan" until I recently found out that a live version is on Greatest Hits #2.

(I think I read) Dylan told that his all-time preferred cover was Tomorrow Is A Long Time by Elvis. I guess that's rather about the pride for being covered by Elvis, rather than for the actual quality since Elvis' version is not that fine. But who knows... we're dealing with somebody who claimed he loved Bobby Vee -who is the kind of early 60s softened rock'n'roll just like Elvis' Tomorrow Is A Long Time!

Better than Dylan: Lay Lady Lay by Magnet ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv4JnFClVmo - try to first listen without looking at the video), I like that kind of voice much more than Dylan's "country crooning".

Rockier than Dylan: Obviously 5 Believers by Big Foot Chester. The records is called The Devil In Me and that's great but I could not find it on YouTube. I do not know if that link http://www.deezer.com/fr/music/big-foot ... -me-573625 works for you.
Absolutely Sweet Marie by Jason @ The Scorchers is fine too, but not as heavy as Big Foot Chester (and possibly not rockier than Dylan).

You forgot the Funnier than Dylan category: (Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee) Memphis Blues Again in Spanish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL5djl_UkyU (possibly not that funny if you are Spanish-native).

Fairport Convention did a lot of good Dylan covers.

I like Elvis informal performance of I Shall Be Released.
It’s only a fragment but it would have made a great cover if he had recorded it for real.
It’s still worth a listen, if only to hear Elvis pronounce the name “DYLAN” at the end of it :D

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band covered Like A Rolling Stone in concert. It was basically the studio version, note for note... except that Bruce's voice is better and the E Street Band sounded a lot better... otherwise it was exactly the same.

Which leads me to ask... why bother? It was like paying $200 a ticket to see the Eagles in concert and every song was note for note exactly like the album... I felt ripped off. I had all the damn albums at home (and really like them). I wanted to experience their abilities as musicians. I should have stayed home and listened to the cds.

Which brings me back to Bob covers... nobody covers Bob like Bob which is why he is truly the Maestro.

True. But I've never been that impressed with it other than the one in Brazil when Bob played with them.

However, Bob's covers of Brown Sugar were so-o-o-o-o darn sweet! Delictible in every way... an aural sensation of beauty and mystical delight! :D

Several Fall 2002 shows featured Brown Sugar... each one a veritable delight to the ears. Most of those show had Warren Zevon covers and some included Neil Young's Old Man... On all accounts, one sees that Bob is better equipped at covers than others are at covering him.

indeed, they actually made "George Jackson" sound decent in the recently re-released Fairport 9 (a live version sung by Trevor Lucas)

the Italian cover of If You See Her from M&A is rather nice, imo.

@JLPierre, yes, that's the one I was referring to.

It can be heard on the Stripped live album. It's also been airwaved -at least in France- when the record was issued (1995).
It's decent but nothing especially exciting.

Has anyone heard the "Is It Rolling Bob? A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan, Vol. 1" album? I know it sounds strange but it's quite awesome.
