It took me a while for this tune (along with a lot of others from the record) to stick out to me, but I love it and it might be my favorite blues track on Love and Theft. The lyrics are just maniacal - the amount of syllables packed into the first line alone is Dylan at his best, and the tempo change is a lot of fun. Thanks to the guitar players too.

The way the band turns that beat around and dumps it on its head is nothing short of mesmerizing, and the lyrics are tougher than a Drano milkshake. A brilliant, lurching song that you can`t help but lurch right along to.

It WAS a great song, the 09 versions dumped the tempo change and it has become just a blues number :(

One of my favourite tunes on L&T!
Amazing live perfomance on the Grammy awards:

By the way, I've been looking for the mp3 of this live version so long. Would anyone help?

It's a great song, fabulous lyric, but isn't it a bit sloppy? Kind of like two tunes welded technically together - "first part of verse, say 'hi' to the second part of verse!".

It's coarse, but in a fine bluesy way...

I love this song, the tempo riding fast then dropping, the lyrics. Sarcastic Dylan at his best. This songs make me feel like a fighting rooster everytime I hear it.

It's just another English expression...of sorts...

But man, Cry A While is something else, that one from the grammies is spot on, the sheer power of that band and Dylan's voice just spits those awesome lyrics out.....

Cry A While is a true underated gem....and my favourite Dylan blues number....

One of my favorites from Love and Theft. I thought it was a bit strange though that he decided to play this one at the Grammys. It's been consistently well performed live too, especially in 04 and 05.

Very good, should be played more, I really liked the grammy version. Favorite line, 'you bet on a horse and it ran the wrong way' lol

It's one of the best songs off what is, as much as any other, his best album.

One of Bob's snarkiest performances.

The great thing about Love & Theft is that is sounds contemporary and classic at the same time. "Cry A While" is no exception.

I've always loved the line, "You bet on a horse and it ran the wrong way." Hilarious.

Talking of specific versions of this tune, it's the single greatest live Dylan performance I've ever witnessed personally. Here it is, from 2003, at the same show that gave us the version of High Water on BS8 (which I also vividly remember and treasure)!

Love the shadow-box grammy performance. I just noticed listening to it now though that skipped the great "Don Pasquale makin' a two a.m. booty call" line. He actually starts out singing that verse at one point but catches himself! Powerhouse song.
