He was instrumental in brokering the Peace accords between Israeli's and Arabs, and in 1950 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the first African-American to ever receive that honor,and the last before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was also an early supporter of Dr. King, school desegregation efforts and the American Civil Rights movement in general.
