Medcalf" (lmedcalf@sfsu.edu) Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1998 21:55:14 -0800 The Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth was pastor of Birmingham's Bethel Baptist Church in 1953, and became active in efforts to desegregate Birmingham schools following the 1954 Supreme Court Brown vs Board of Education decision outlawing school desegregation. He organized the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, the group which spearheaded civil rights activity in the Birmingham area during the mid-1960s. In 1955 he joined Dr. King as one of five organizers of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. To the best of my knowledge, the Reverend Shuttlesworth is still alive, and speaks occassionally on his role in the movement and his relationship with Dr. King.
