The Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth was pastor of Birmingham's Bethel Baptist
Church in 1953, and became active in efforts to desegregate Birmingham
schools following the 1954 Supreme Court Brown vs Board of Education
decision outlawing school desegregation. He organized the Alabama Christian
Movement for Human Rights, the group which spearheaded civil rights
activity in the Birmingham area during the mid-1960s. In 1955 he joined Dr.
King as one of five organizers of the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference. To the best of my knowledge, the Reverend Shuttlesworth is
still alive, and speaks occassionally on his role in the movement and his
relationship with Dr. King.
