Tony Loeffler: In The Texas Heat.....L&A Records CD31975 (2001).....amazon.com Tony Loeffler is best known for his work in the Christian music genre. He also frequently recorded for prison audiences, some of “Bootleg Live!” was recorded at Rikers Island prison in New York, and all of “In The Texas Heat” was recorded at various prisons in Texas, Philadelphia and Switzerland (location of individual tracks is not noted.) Both of these CDs include versions of Blind Willie McTell, a 9 minute version on “Bootleg Live!” and a 5:48 version on “In The Texas Heat.” But the real find here is on “In The Texas Heat”: to my knowledge the only existing cover of Trouble In Mind, the obscure B-side of Bob's 1979 Gotta Serve Somebody 45. Loeffler stretches the song to almost 9½ minutes. On his more recent albums, Tony has concentrated on various Cuban musical styles. |
February, 2005 | Richie Ranno & The North Jersey All-Stars • Tribute |
(2004) ...
Richie Ranno was lead guitarist of the seventies hard rock / heavy metal band Starz. This 2004 self-released CDR is a tribute to some of his favorite songs and artists. Of the 10 tracks and 12 songs, 3 are Dylan covers: All Along The Watchtower, I Shall Be Released, and My Back Pages. Also on the album is The Traveling Wilbury's Handle With Care, a duet with Phoebe Snow. Bob is not mentioned in the liner notes (except for writer's credits,) but Jimi Hendrix, Rick Danko, The Byrds and George Harrison are mentioned, so apparently the "tribute" of these 4 songs is intended for them. The other 6 tracks are Neil Young's Mr. Soul and I Am A Child, Brian May's We Will Rock You, Jackson Browne's Somebody's Baby, Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire (with Phoebe Snow,) and a medley of Long Cool Woman, Suzie Q, and Born On The Bayou. Betty Dylan is the Nashville
duo Dr. Dan and Vickie Dubelman. The "Dylan" describes Dan's
writing
and singing style - Dylan-esque - and "Betty" represents the female
part
of their sound. "Abdicate The Throne" includes a quirky but
effective
Masters
Of War.

Sister Paul •
The Edge Of The World
(Japan, 2000) This Japanese band Sister Paul is described as a "speed glam punk" trio. From that, and the cover photo, you can guess that their version of Blowin' In The Wind won't be confused with Peter, Paul & Mary's! Not recommended for the traditionalist. |
|||

|
Ka’ala Boys • No Doubt About It (US - Hawaii, 2003) The third album by Hawaii's Ka'ala Boys, "No Doubt About It" is a prime example of their "Jawaiian sound" - a mix of light reggae & traditional Hawaiian music, which also describes their version of Blowin' In The Wind. The track also appears on their Japan-only compilation CD "Surf Edition for Japan." |
