Thanks for all the updates! November 17, 2001 BOB DYLAN WEBRING DYLAN COVER ALBUMS has joined the Bob Dylan WebRing, which is now under new management and finally processing new members after being dormant for many months. The entire WebRing system is also under new management, following Yahoo!'s transfer of responsibility back to WebRing, Inc. after a disastrous year. DYLAN COVER ALBUMS is also a member of the Bob Dylan: Inner Vision WebRing, and two webrings in the RingSurf system: Fans of Bob Dylan and The Record Collectors Webring. Use the NAVIGATION BOXES at the bottom of the MAIN PAGE to access many other Dylan-related and collector-related sites that are members of these rings. November 17, 2001 FOREVER YOUNG Amazon UK has finally updated their listing for Forever Young: A British Folk Tribute to Bob Dylan, although not much. At least "Bob Dylan" is now included in the title! The review posted was written by me, it's a mystery why they dropped my name and posted it anonymously. Probably don't like me advertising dylancoveralbums.com! Currently the title is only offered on Amazon'z UK website. November 16, 2001 AMAZON LISTS Check out these two "Listmania" lists I have posted at amazon.com: Bob Dylan Songs He Never Released [http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/listmania/list-browse/-/3I48679IK5QKC/dylancoveralb-20 ] Dylan Cover Albums You May Have Missed [ http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/listmania/list-browse/-/3B4TDJBXCXX7R/dylancoveralb-20 ] November 16, 2001OWE SIGVARDSSON ADDED I have added the 1991 cassette Dylan m fl by Swede Owe Sigvardsson to the VOCALS section. I considered placing it in NEAR MISSES, as 4 of the 12 tracks are not Dylan compositions, but opted for VOCALS due to the title. Two of the remaining 4 were covered by Bob on Self Portrait, but are incorrectly credited to him on cassette. See the webpage [ http://www.zamba.se/musik/Album/Album6.html] for more information. November 14, 2001 FOREVER YOUNG NOTES The Forever Young: A British Folk Tribute to Bob Dylan is a good collection of recent Dylan covers by veteran British folk acts, but lacks any annotation about the artists or origin of the recordings. July 28, 2001 MICHEL MONTECROSSA I have added the 6 CD set of Michel Montecrossa's Bob Dylan Fest 2001 in the NEAR MISSES section, using track lists and other information from the Michel Montecrossa Sings Bob Dylan webpage. I will make any corrections whenever I see the box, or receive further information. At least one of the tracks listed as a Dylan cover has been questioned. I also moved Montecrossa's last CD, 4th Time Around, from VOCALS to the NEAR MISSES section, since only 11 of it's 17 tracks are Dylan covers. July 6, 2001 MICHAEL MOORE / JEWELS AND BINOCULARS In response to an e-mail posing the question regarding the artist and title of the new Michael Moore Trio jazz CD, Michael Moore himself answered: "The title of the album is 'Jewels and Binoculars' (the music of Bob Dylan). The title of the group is 'Jewels and Binoculars' (Moore/Horner/Vatcher). I do a lot of different small group projects and I get tired of calling them the Michael Moore this of that. This is really a collaborative effort. Sorry for the confusion caused by having the same name for the album and the group." Based on this I have re-listed the CD under "Jewels and Binoculars," and left a cross-reference under "The Michael Moore Trio." Thanks to Michael for his explanation. July 6, 2001 EPs on CDs Magic Records of France has released a series of CDs that recreate original 60s 7" 3 & 4 tracks EPs. There are still several new tribute albums expected before the end of the year: • Pressing On: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan (various artists). Covers from Bob's Gospel albums. • Reggae Rocks: Bob Dylan (various artists). The sampler for this upcoming series, "The Tide Is High: A Tribute To Rock'n'Roll" is now available. July 2, 2001 THE ROBINS SING DYLAN A new album has been added to the VOCALS section. It is a double-CDR released in 1999 by The Robins Sing, a group from Germany. It is simply titled The Robins Sing Dylan. The CDR contains 23 Dylan covers, including a few unusual ones such as Under The Red Sky, Billy 7 and In The Summertime. I don't have cost or ordering details, but you can contact The Robins Sing through their website. Please mention you saw it here at Dylan Cover Albums........Thanks to Anton for finding the link, and to Mani of The Robins Sing for additional info June 29, 2001 PIERCE PETTIS DOES DYLAN The new album by songwriter Pierce Pettis, to be released July 10th, includes a cover of Down In The Flood. Title of the CD is "State Of Grace" Order from amazon.com June 27, 2001 ALEXANDRU ANDRIES CD Two months ago, I e-mailed A&A Records in Romania, inquirying about the availability of Alexandru Andries' Alb Negru CD. Today, 64 days later, I received a reply. Unfortunately, it is in Romanian! Using a handy on-line dictionary, I think it says the "CD is out of stock, but they hope to remake a number of copies soon." If anyone can translate and verify that, the note reads "Alb Negru s-a epuizat, speram sa refacem un nou tiraj in curand" June 22, 2001 WHO NAMED MICHAEL MOORE? There seems to be a question as to the artist and title of the new Michael Moore Trio jazz CD... fueled by the fact that nowhere on the item does it say "Michael Moore Trio." One theory is that "Jewels and Binoculars" is used as a pseudonym for the trio, and the title is simply "The Music of Bob Dylan." On the other hand, I am told stories in the press in The Netherlands give "Jewels and Binoculars" as the title. The website of the distributor is under reconstruction (www.bvhaast.nl) so I cannot get confirmation there, either way. For the moment I am leaving it listed under Michael Moore Trio, with a cross reference under "Jewels and Binoculars." June 21, 2001 JOHN LEE HOOKER DIES AT 83 Legendary bluesman John Lee Hooker died in San Francisco Thursday, June 21, at age 83. June 11, 2001 STEVE FORBERT DOES DYLAN "I-10 Chronicles, Part 2," for which Steve Forbert recorded a cover of Watching the River Flow, is tentatively scheduled to be released in August on the Virgin label. The concept of this series is to explore music along America's longest highway, Interstate I-10 that runs from Los Angeles to the Florida coast. Last year's Part 1 included songs representing the drive from California to Texas. Part 1 (no Dylan covers) available from amazon.com or amazon.co.uk or amazon.de (UK and DE as US import) Part 2 with Forbert's Watching the River Flow not available for ordering yet. Steve Forbert performed at the recent Dylan birthday festival in Alba, Italy. His first show was a mix of his own songs and these Dylan covers: Watching The River Flow, He Was Only A Hobo, Trying To Get To Heaven, Mr. Tambourine Man, All Along The Watchtower, Open The Door Homer, and Like a Rolling Stone. Steve did a second show on the last day of the festival, this time all-Dylan: I Want You, Watching The River Flow, Trying To Get To Heaven, Tangled Up In Blue, Open The Door Homer, I Shall Be Released, and Like A Rolling Stone. June 11, 2001 DUMPTRUCK DID DYLAN "Lemmings Travel to the Sea," the album released last February by Austin-via-Boston band Dumptruck, includes a 2nd bonus disc of live recordings from the band's 80s heyday, when they were a mainstay of college radio. The live disc contains 2 Dylan covers: You Ain't Going Nowhere and Idiot Wind. Available from either amazon.com or amazon.co.uk or amazon.de(UK and DE as US import) June 2, 2001 IT AIN'T ME BABE & BYRDS • I received the new Castle Music compilation today... The full title is It Ain't Me Babe - Zimmerman Framed: The Songs of Bob Dylan (CMRCD 261). Several corrections to the earlier track list from Amazon: Mr. Tambourine Man is by The Marmalade, the Cops 'n Robbers track is It's All Over Now Baby Blue. Most Likely You Go Your Way is the Todd Rundgren cover from 1976, and the John Schroeder track listed earlier is not on the CD. • Also received was the new Byrds 20 track CD, The Byrds Play The Songs of Bob Dylan. The artwork and trick-list shown earlier are correct, except that the 2nd Times They Are A-Changin' is an alternate version, not a live recording June 2, 2001 NEW DYLAN JAZZ There is a new Dutch CD of jazz Dylan covers, by The Michael Moore Trio, an American working in The Netherlands. The title is Jewels and Binoculars, on Moore's own Ramboy label, world-wide distribution by BVHaast. Half of the CD's tracks are from a December 3, 2000 concert "The Michael Moore trio plays Bob Dylan," which is to be broadcast on Dutch radio Friday 6/8. May 26, 2001 JUDY SINGS DYLAN BY LASERLIGHT I have finally seen a copy of the Laserlight distributed version of Judy Collins Sings Dylan. It is exactly like the original Geffen CD... in fact it is the same CD, with only a Delta Entertainment (Laserlight's parent) sticker on the back. Apparently Delta bought out the remaining Geffen stock. So it is really only a distributor change, not a new reissue, so I have deleted the Laserlight info from the CD's listing. The 24-track CD duplicates 5 tracks from the 1993 Songs of Bob Dylan CD from Sequel, which is part of the Castle Communications Group. One track is credited to Bob Dylan, I assume that is an error. Trade only, no cash sales; especially interested in foreign editions of Dylan LPs. May 12, 2001 CD + CD-R / NO LIMIT As the number of releases on CD-R continues to increase, the line between what is legitimate and what isn't is getting very hazy. Simply ruling out CD-Rs altogether does not seem to be the right course, since some interesting and worthwhile items have appeared that way, and even the big record companies now issue advance discs on CD-R. In light of this, I have discontinued the CD-R Compilations page, which only contained 2 titles anyway, and will now list CD-Rs wherever is appropriate for each individual title. Dylan på Svenska is now in the TRANSLATIONS section, and Cover To Cover is in VARIOUS ARTISTS May 12, 2001 OLA MAGNELL: BOB DYLAN INTERPRETED I have added a new CD-R from Sweden to the TRANSLATIONS section, Bob Dylan Interpreted is a compilation of Dylan covers by Sweden's Ola Magnell. The majority of the disc is in Swedish... with 4 of the 18 tracks sung in English. The disc combines live recordings with tracks from the albums "Påtalåtar" (1973), "Nya perspektiv" (1975), "Europaväg 66" (1981), and "Gaia" (1983); plus the 1980 single Tamburinmannen and a 1980 outake of Immigrant (I Pity The Poor Immigrant). Includes the first cover on this site of Planet Wave's Hazel, sung in Swedish and retitled Blondie. May 11, 2001 THANKS TO H.P. Thanks to Ole for the tip A partial track listing is given on the Sony Music UK site. The catalog # is 501946 1, with a May 8 release date. There appears to be at least one track, Just Like A Woman, that was only on the Japanese expanded edition, and another track, It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), not on any previous edition. And Mr. Tambourine Man is listed twice! May 6, 2001 LIVE CD BY STEVE GIBBONS' DYLAN PROJECT Available on the Woodworm Records website is a live CD by Steve Gibbons' Dylan Project. Mail address is: 3 Southwell Square Linthorpe Middlesbrough TS5 6QF England The band will soon have their own website, I will post the URL when available. Michael provided these details about the recording of the album: "The basement fakes were recorded at Studio 64, Middlesbrough England. The sound is deliberately analogue with very few overdubs (i.e. harmonica added later on Catfish.) Ghost vocals were used on at least half of the tracks, and as Dylanesque are only three we felt we had a chance of recreating an early to mid sixties sound. Dylan himself has recorded in this way many a time with a paired down sound (i.e. "John Wesley Harding") and those songs sound to me like first takes ( its recorded --got it -leave it;) and of course Dylan solo in the studio is as good as it gets. I tried that on 4th Time Around but I will leave you to be my judge on that." The new release has not been added to the Newsound2000 site yet. This is the 5th orchestra these tracks have been credited to: 1) London Unity Orchestra 2) London Pops Orchestra 3) London Sound & Art Orchestra 4) George Mynon Orchestra 5) Royal Philharmonic Orchestra... the last 2 both on the same CD !! It is interesting that Newsound2000 lists several other "tribute" CDs as by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra April 2, 2001 RAMBLIN' JACK ON CD Bull Durham Sacks & Railroad Tracks, the 1970 Reprise album by Ramblin' Jack Elliott that was my FEATURE album for February, is now available on CD exclusively from Collector's Choice Music. Outtake from his latest album. Digital Retro (halfway down page) • Several fan-submitted mp3's (+1 RealAudio) are available at They All Play On Penny Whistles • 36 (!) covers by Joe Valenti are available at the re-born IUMA; search for "joevalenti", click 2nd "artist page" • Jimmy LaFave's Emotionally Yours from his new CD "Texoma" Bohemia Beat • Hole's It's All Over Now, Baby Blue at Hole.com (click on AUDIO link) • JulieFelix.com offers a mp3 of a 1998 live The Times They Are A-Changin', but I have not been able to download a working copy, the file is garbled. Anyone been successful? March 29, 2001 MAY YOUR SONG ALWAYS BE SUNG AGAIN: TRACK LIST I posted a TRACK LIST for the upcoming M.Y.S.A.B.S.Again CD (see entry below.) Please note that this is a preliminary list, and therefore is subject to revision or additions. Chronologically, the tracks range from Odetta's Paths Of Victory from her 1964 LP "Odetta Sings of Many Things," recently a bonus track on BMG's Odetta Sings Dylan CD, to Etta James' Gotta Serve Somebody from her 2000 CD "Matriarch Of The Blues" March 28, 2001 TOO MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT NOTHIN'... I have added some new information to the site: • In the VARIOUS-ARTISTS section, for albums that are compilations of existing recordings, I have added the year of each track after the artist's name. • Throughout the site, I have added the running time for CDs, in minutes:seconds format: [MMM:SS]. This notation can be found after the country of origin. In all cases the time stated is the total time for the CD, not just the Dylan tracks. In the case of multiple CD releases, the time is only stated once unless tracks were added or deleted. March 24, 2001 NEW & RECENT COVERS • Eagles member Timothy B. Schmit's new solo album, "Feed The Fire," contains a cover of Make You Feel My Love. The album is due to be released May 1. • Released in January by Alligator Records, the gospel album "Speaking In Tongues" by the Holmes Brothers includes a cover of Man Of Peace, who covered Wallflower on the Tangled Up In Blues CD. • The recently released CD "Shining Star," 1989-93 live recordings of the Jerry Garcia Band, has a cover of Positively 4th Street. "Don't Let Go," released earlier this year, has a 1976 live version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door March 22, 2001 OPINION: Red House Records' A Nod To Bob[Release date: May 8] This is a great album, with a wide range of artists: Dylan predecessors Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Rosalie Sorrels, contemporaries Spider John Koerner and Dave Ray, newer names John Gorka, 2 of the Roche sisters, and others. Add bluesman Guy Davis, world-beat band The Paperboys, Quebec band Hart-Rouge, string legends Norman Blake & Peter Ostroushko, and UK folkie Martin Simpson and it's a varied and interesting album. Most unsusual selection: Clothes Line Saga by Suzzy & Maggie Roche, originally on "The Basement Tapes." Highlights are a very slow version of I Want You by Cliff Eberhardt, Tom Landa & The Paperboy's Irish reel treatment of All Along The Watchtower, and Hart-Rouge's French-language version of With God On Our Side. Spider John Koerner & Dave Ray offer Delia, the traditional song Dylan himself covered on his "World Gone Wrong" album. Ramblin' Jack Elliott's Don't Think Twice, It's All Right is the only live track on the CD, complete with a spoken introduction that's worth the cost of the CD. Packaging: jewel-box in a slip-case; 20-page booklet with artist photos, bios & comments; credits Format: CD; 15 tracks (14 songs-#14 is a 1:48 spoken intro); 63:09 Pre-Order from Red House Records March 22, 2001 OPINION: 2 Of Us From Zimmermann To Genghis Khan Acoustic versions of mostly well known songs, with the exception of One More Night. Features vocal harmonies from the duo of Erwin Eder and Rudi Mangst, with Martina Fillmore adding female harmony vocals on some tracks. The twin guitars result in a more hard-driving sound than the standard folkie fare. Added instrumentation on a few tracks keep things varied, for example a tin whistle on Boots Of Spanish Leather gives it a sea-shanty feel that works well. Packaging: standard jewel-box; single sheet insert with sparse credits Format: CD; 12 tracks; 46:41 e-mail for ordering information March 21, 2001 LONDON UNITY ORCHESTRA: UPDATE Newsound 2000 Ltd. advises that The London Unity Orchestra Plays Bob Dylan is a new title, so it should eventually be available through their website, which has secure on-line ordering, as well as other sellers. I'll post a notice whenever it appears, or keep checking newsound2000.com March 21, 2001 MAY YOUR SONG ALWAYS BE SUNG AGAIN Bob Dylan's 60th birthday continues to be a boon for us Dylan Cover Album collectors! Due for release May 7 by BMG-Ariola is "May Your Song Always Be Sung Again: The Songs of Bob Dylan Vol. 2," a companion to May Your Song Always Be Sung, BMG's 1997 collection. Once again compiled by Hanns Peter Bushoff, the new volume promises to be a mix of the familiar and the obscure, both in songs and the artists covering them. The final track selection is not set, but expect covers from all eras, from the 60s through recent recordings. The compilation will include some translated tracks. More details to come... . . Julie Felix , which was a past Feature album. March 16, 2001 LONDON UNITY ORCHESTRA I have added a new CD that appeared on eBay recently, The London Unity Orchestra Plays Bob Dylan, released by Newsound 2000 Ltd. The 16 titles are the same as the London Sound & Art Orchestra CD, in a different order... it is unknown at this time if they are the same recordings. Included on the album is a cover of Blind Willie McTell. ======================================================= January 26, 2001 OPINION: ROLLING THUNDER Rolling Thunder's The Never Ending Rehearsal is a generally mellow album, with Gotta Serve Somebody rocking more than the others. Several of the arrangements are quite different from the "normal," keeping the album interesting. The three members share lead vocals duties. Making the disc a must have are the rarely-covered Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat) from "Street-Legal," Billy from "Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid," and "Blood On The Tracks'" Meet Me In The Morning and Lily, Rosemary and The Jack Of Hearts. Also notable are Man In The Long Black Coat and Dark Eyes. Thanks to John Format: CD-R; 13 Tracks; Total time: 69:21. My score: 7 of 10. Visit bdylan.co.uk for more information about the album, Blue Frog Records and Rolling Thunder January 22-25, 2001 CRASH!! On Monday my computer's hard-drive died, and I lost many of my contact e-mail addresses. I was able to recover some of them from back-up files, but if you were expecting a reply from me, it may be that I no longer have your address. I am back in business now. January 19, 2001 ROLLING THUNDER... a CD-R Rolling Thunder's The Never Ending Rehearsal title is a CD-R, contrary to my earlier information. January 17, 2001 IMPORT (TO ME!) Another copy closed at a relative bargain of $100.87 January 11, 2001 OPINION: IT TAKES A LOT TO LAUGH The Andy Hill and Renée Safier CD, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, is highly recommended. The disc is mostly acoustic, with some electric guitar backing... a few tracks feature piano. The two vocalists alternate roles from track to track, with Renee singing lead and Andy singing harmony on the odd number tracks, and the reverse on the evens. Standout track to me is One More Cup Of Coffee, with Spanish guitar and piano intrumentation, and the vocal roles the reverse of the "Desire" original. Thanks to Renée Format: CD; 14 Tracks; Total time: 58:57. My score: 10 of 10. Visit andyandrenee.com for more information about other albums available (including Renée's "The 14th Of February" which includes her version of Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power).) Jimmy LaFave Website January 9, 2001 ROLLING THUNDER CD Blue Frog Records in the UK has released a CD of Dylan covers by the trio Rolling Thunder, titled The Never Ending Rehearsal. More information about the 13-track release, and a bio of the band, can be found at www.bdylan.co.uk. It is an interesting track list, mostly drawn from post-60s Dylan. Unusual choices are Where Are You Tonight (Journey Through Dark Heat), Billy (said to be the first licensed cover of the song) and Lilly Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts. The oldest is It's All Over Now, Baby Blue; the newest is Love Sick. Cost is £8.99 + postage (£1 to the U.S.); contact information is at the above address. Please mention you found the link at Dylan Cover Albums. Thanks to John at Blue Frog Records for the info January 5, 2001 THINGS HAVE CHANGED: TITLE TRACKS I have decided to "spin-off" the Title Tracks areas of the website onto separate, but connected, webpages. The new pages can be accessed by the banner on the main page of Dylan Cover Albums, or directly at http://dylancoveralbums.com/titletracks.html. • The new pages have a different look to differentiate them, including re-formatting the Album pages to match the EP/Single pages -- i.e. grouping items with the same title together. • Bootlegs have been moved to a separate page. • New additions for the Title Tracks pages will now be listed only on the new Title Track Main Page. • The change results in some duplication, as items that qualify for both areas are repeated. • The ARTIST LIST in Dylan Cover Albums will continue to list items from both sites. • The PicoSearch site-search boxes will search pages from both sites. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome. January 5, 2001 MUSICA GLOBAL DISCOGRAFICA ON-LINE STORE OPEN The on-line store of Musica Global Discografica, publisher of the Els Miralls de Dylan CDs, is now open.
