Gotta Serve Somebody 2018

Sydney, August 19
(new rhythm, old-time blues band version, lyrics now perfected, tighter, minor changes from other nights)

1
You might be an ambassador to England or France
You might like to gamble, you might like to dance
May be in Minneapolis, having lots of fun
May be hiding in the bushes, holding a smoking gun

You gotta serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody
Might be the devil, may be the Lord
You still gotta serve somebody

2
You might be in a honky tonk, a nursing home
Searching through the rubble with a fine-tooth comb
They may call you Peter, they may call you Paul
They may call you nothing at all

You gotta serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody
Might be the devil, might be the Lord
But you, you gotta serve somebody

3
You may be walking on the high wire, trooping down below
Gazing in the future or going with the flow
You may call your father Time, name your mother Earth
You might not even know the date of your birth

Serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody
It might be the devil, may be the Lord
But you gotta serve somebody

4
Well, you might be a mystic, they may call you Mr Soul
May be on the wagon, may be on a roll
May be someone's neighbour, somebody's mother's son
Someone's jealous husband, someone on the run

You gotta serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody
Might be the devil, might be the Lord
But you gotta serve somebody

5
Well, you might be on the highway, you might heading for the coast
Maybe you're hallucinating, you think you've seen a ghost
You may be a businessman, you may be a farmer
You may be a state trooper wearing body armour

You still gotta serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody
Yeah, it might be the devil or it might be the Lord
You gotta serve somebody

Great; thanks for Enmore, now we don't have to wonder ...enmore.

Sydney, August 19

May be in Enmore, may be having lots of fun

Sydney, August 18

Might be going to dances, or going for the flow

You may be somebody's neighbour, some mother's son
May be someone's jealous husband, someone on the run
You may be on the borderline, holding down the fort
Maybe you're a lawyer, waiting for your day in court

May also be worth noting that Lennon's "Serve Yourself" (a song Bob is aware of) features the line "You say you've found Buddha, and he's lots of fun" and a lot about "mother". (Also John ad-libbing "Get yourself a lawyer" and "Ain't no accountants, lawyers, waiters".) https://youtube.com/watch?v=u6PLm2JNnW0

"But it might be unrelated".

You might've cried a river, might’ve cried a tear
jump into the traffic like a mountain (mounted?) cavalier

Serve Somebody
10 Oct 2018
Irving, Texas

1
You might be an ambassador to England or France
You might like to gamble, you might like to dance
Maybe up in Vegas, havin’ lots of fun
Hidin’ in the bushes, holdin’ a smoking gun

You gotta serve somebody
Serve somebody
Might be the devil, maybe the Lord
But you gotta serve somebody

2
Well you may be in a honky tonk, or in a nursing home
Searching through the rubble with a fine-tooth comb
They may call you Peter, they may call you Paul
Maybe they don’t call you anything, anything at all

You gotta serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody
Well it might be the devil, maybe the Lord
But you gotta serve somebody

3
You may be on the highway, headin’ for the coast
May be hallucinatin’, you might think you seen a ghost
They may call your Father Time, may call ya Mother Earth
You might not even know the date of your birth

You gotta serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody
Well it might be the devil, maybe the Lord
But you gotta serve somebody

4
Maybe someone's neighbor, or some stakeholder’s son
Someone's jealous husband, or someone on the run
Might be on the borderline, holdin’ down the fort
Maybe you’re a lawyer waiting for your day in court

You gotta serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody

Serve Somebody
13 Oct 2018
Thackerville, OK

1
You might be an ambassador to England or France
You might like to gamble, you might like to dance
You might be in Las Vegas, having lots of fun
Maybe hidin’ in the bushes, holdin’ a smoking gun

You gotta serve somebody
Ah yeah, serve somebody
It might be the devil, it might be the Lord
But you really gotta serve somebody

2
Well you might be in a honky tonk, in a nursing home
Searching through the rubble with a fine-tooth comb
They may call you Peter, they may call you Paul
Maybe they don’t even call you anything at all

You gotta serve somebody
Uh, eh yeah, serve somebody
It might be the devil, might be the Lord
But you gotta serve somebody

3
Well you might be on the highway, headin’ for the coast
Maybe you might be hallucinatin’, you might think you seen a ghost
Maybe call your Father Time, maybe Mother Earth
You might not even know the exact, the exact, date of your birth

You’re gonna serve somebody
One of these days you’re gonna serve somebody
Well it might be the devil, could be the Lord
But you really gotta serve somebody

4
Well you might be someone's neighbor, or someone’s other son
Someone's jealous husband, or someone on the run
Might be on the borderline, holdin’ down the fort
Maybe you’re a lawyer waiting for your day in court

You’re gonna serve somebody
Right yeah, you’re gonna serve somebody
Well it might be the devil, might be the Lord
But you really gotta serve somebody

Solid versions of Serve in the past 2 FL shows (Clearwater & Sarasota).
Same lyrics as Thackerville from what I could tell.

He’ll most likely do it again tonight!

I love the new lyrics, kind of miss the Mr. Soul bit from earlier 2018 shows - "you might be on the wagon, might be on a roll" is a pretty great formulation.

Sarasota:

You might not even know the date, or the day of your birth

Everything else pretty settled like Thackerville above

The breaks between verses 2 & 3 and between 3 & 4 and at the end might be a bit cleaner developed?
What a great Set closer.

Brisbane, August 24

You might be on the highway, heading for the coast
Maybe you're hallucinating, maybe you think you've seen a ghost
You might have cried a river, might have cried a tear
Patrolling through the traffic like a mountain cavalier

(Another mountain cavalier/caballero song; through Google:

And oh I love the waterfall
And the way the river's seen
From snowcapped peaks both proud and tall
Through forests deep and green

The highway of the mountains
The lifeblood of the land

from "Durango Mountain Caballero" by John Denver)

Thanks for your diligence in transcribing these, Cap.
Love this facet of Dylan! Who else is out there
constantly tweaking & changing lyrics to their own writings?

A big "Thank You" to all who have transcribed the lyrics. I was at the show in Richmond, KY, last night and was unable to catch all the new lyrics. This is much appreciated.
