I actually heard it as a fine r&b idea that was poorly arranged and mixed (it was the eighties after all). One of Mike Campbell's less interesting efforts, too. Dylan probably chose his first take.

I know I like this one (and all of EB) more than most,
but I just had to share this little gem I found recently.
A truly funky version this from 1991, a year not known for too
many tight rock versions of his songs, this one defies expectations.
Bob and his little band are really focused in here and JJ is just a fireball
of energy.
You can hear that Bob is on top of things tonight and this performance
is reminiscent of the great Seeing The Real You's from 86-87

Check this one out

And here's a slightly less killer version, BUT it's video of a great show
from Owings Mill MD:

Listening to the Tampa Florida (September 30, 1995) performance. Parts of Seeing the Real You at Last are blistering. What a beauty... I really wish I had been there for this one!

And at the end of the show, Dickie Betts plays with Bob and His Band. Really nice performance of Ramblin, Man
