Do you have a Dylan song or songs or parts of a song that just gets you emotionally? I don't just mean strike a chord, I mean sends chills up your spine every time you listen to that song or part of a song.

Mine is Desolation Row, the line: Between the windows of the sea where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much about Desolation Row.

There is no explanation for it other than I love it so. It can nearly bring me to tears some times and I am a macho man who never cries. Bob Dylan's songs are beautiful.

I do love that bit in D row too, Pauley. The moment that gets to me every single time is the last verse in Shooting star.

Guess it's too late to say the things to you
That you needed to hear me say
Seen a shooting star tonight
Slip away

A part that always makes me feel a deep joyful feeling are the following verses from "Watered Down Love":

Capture your soul and hold it for ransom. (The way Bob says "ransom" is part of the feeling, and for some reason I love the word "ransom", I find it very melodic)

You don't want a love that's pure
You want to drown love
You want a watered-down love.

And the following guitar riff.

Österreicher! :D :D :D

"Some trains don't pull no gamblers / No midnight ramblers like they did before." - Tryin' To Get To Heaven
"Let me forget about today until tomorrow." - Mr. Tambourine Man
All of Every Grain of Sand
"Down over the windows / come the dazzling sunlight rays. / Through the back alleys, through the blinds / Another one of them endless days." - Floater
"God is in His heaven and we all want what's his / But power and greed and corruptible seed seem to be all that there is." - Blind Willie McTell

And for a really, really obscure one, I just can't hear Dylan's performances of "Lakes of Pontchartrain" or "Female Rambling Sailor" without getting a tear in my eye.

"Forgetful Heart", one of the best songs ever written.

I feel the same as you. The song is quite emotional and shocking.

Shadows are falling and I’ve been here all day
It’s too hot to sleep, time is running away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I’ve still got the scars that the sun didn’t heal
There’s not even room enough to be anywhere
It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there

The lines are universal such that even a young man could understand,
but that young man won't really know until the clock starts ticking down.

Perhaps this is true for women, as well.
As it is, I can't know.

We all know women don't really have emotions... :) Great answers.

I'll add;
'Oh the lines are long and the fighting is strong
And they're breaking down the distance between right and wrong'. Ring Them Bells.

There's a woman by the river
With some fine young handsome man
He's dressed up like a squire
Bootlegged whiskey in his hand
There's a chain gang on the highway
I can hear them rebels yell
And I know no one can sing the blues
Like Blind Willie McTell.

And this bit of it takes a lot to laugh 'Well, if I die on top of the hill
And if I don't make it, you know my baby will
Don't the moon look good, mama, shinin' through the trees
Don't the brakemen look good, mama, flaggin' down the "Double-E"
Don't the sun look good goin' down over the sea
But don't my gal look fine when she's comin' after me'

Moooore!

"I figured I'd lost you anyway.
Why go on, what's the use?
In order to get in a word with you
I'd of had to come up with some excuse
And it just struck me kinda funny"

Cinderella she seems so easy
"It takes one to know one", she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style

I don't much like the "mermaids" verse. "Windows of the sea" is OK, but he could have thought of a better two syllable adjective than "lovely". And mermaids don't "flow". Water flows, mermaids swim. "Flow" is only there because he was running out of rhymes for "Row". Nowhere near as bad as the dreadful "kelp" in "Sara", but still a bit lazy.

"If you don’t believe there’s a price for this sweet paradise
Remind me to show you the scars"

Basically that whole damn song ... just gets me every time!

Off the top of my head, I think of a line from Up To Me:
"It frightens me, the awful truth of how sweet life can be"
It reminds me how fragile luck can be.

There are lots of others, I actually once created a list of lines and verses which touch me the most. It might add a few of them here later.

The last verse of Up To Me, 'and if we never meet again.......' is one that always gets me.

'Nothing 'cept you' - the whole song, but only the live versions; I find the studio out-take very disappointing whereas the live ones are charged with great emotional energy.

'I'm not there (I'm gone)' - totally shiversville.

So many it would be impossible to list them all. The man has huge spirit.

Forgetful Heart, yes.

Practically all of Time Out of Mind (it is eternity after all), but especially this:

Don't even hear the murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet
But it's getting there.

Every Grain of Sand.

Make You Feel My Love.

To Ramona.

Visions of Johanna.

Pressing On.

Foot of Pride.

High Water.

So, so many.

I love that one too. But because I neither play guitar nor harmonica, I can't identify with it completely :D

So many!

When you wake up in the mornin’, baby, look inside your mirror
You know I won’t be next to you, you know I won’t be near
I’d just be curious to know if you can see yourself as clear
As someone who has had you on his mind

I somehow physically feel this every time:

I’m going out of my mind,
With a pain that stops and starts
Like a corkscrew to my heart
Ever since we’ve been apart

(MBMT take 1 or the official released take - doesn't matter)
