Subject: Dylan in Dallas ... November 7th
Well I'm still vibrating, so I don't know if I'll make
much sense. But Bob came through Dallas last night
and played at the very awful and barn-y Dallas Music
Complex.
How the sound cats made that big tin shed sound decent is
a mystery.
But Bob was wonderful. What strikes me the most about this
tour different from the last 4 times I've seen him in the
past 6 years, is how carefully he's singing. (Better monitors
for Sir Bob, maybe?) But his phrasing is light and breath-
taking and the songs are rejuvenated by it. (Boots of
Spanish Leather benefitted the most by this, I think.)
Also starting around 4 years ago Bob started to REALLY play
the guitar. I've seen numerous little jabs at him here
on rmd for soloing so much in recent months, but I was
very impressed with the variety and the shape of most of his
solos, especially during the acoustic set (Don't Think Twice,
especially.)
I have more to say, but I'm far too scattered to put it down now.
Suffice it to say, seeing Bob up close last night was my own
version of going up to the mountain top. The words to My Back
Pages and God Knows and Crash on the Levee are still ricocheting
around my head.
I danced a little, sang a lot, prayed a little in my own way,
and left feeling like there were reasons to keep living.

Subject: Dallas Set List (I think.)
Please forgive me if I've made any mistakes on this set list.
I've done my best to remember what happened, but the whole
show was such a chaotic rush that I'm lucky I even remembered
where I lived. The little parenthetical notes are just some
things I thought especially notable.
1. Crash on the Levee
2. I Want You
3. All Along The Watchtower (not as good as the HoF show)
4. Positively 4th Street (excellent singing)
5. Leopard-skin Pill-box Hat
6. Silvio (can never listen to Down in the Groove again.
This was just too good.)
7. Tangled Up In Blue {w/o Winston}
8. Boots Of Spanish Leather {w/o Winston} (best singing of the night)
9. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right {w/o Winston}
(Bob's best guitar playing all night.)
10. God Knows (Left out some verses.)
11. Knocking On Heaven's Door
12. Cat's In The Well
13. Alabama Getaway
14. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (acoustic)
15. Rainy Day Women Nos. 12 & 35
Wish I could be in Vegas next week.

Still too tired, and blew away what I mistakenly wrote as a mail
response, so I'll make this brief.
Here's what I got off the cool we site:
Down In The Flood
I Want You
All Along The Watchtower
Positively 4th Street
Leopard-skin Pill-box Hat
Silvio
Tangled Up in Blue (ac)
Boots of Spanish Leather (ac)
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (ac)
God Knows
Knocking On Heaven's Door
Cat's In The Well
(encore)
Alabama Getaway
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (ac)
Rainy Day Women Nos. 12 & 35
Look's accurate to me, but what's "Cat's In The Well"? He said some
stuff before that, but it was apparently the band introductions.

Subject: Dylan Rocks Dallas
I'll leave it to others to post the complete setlist. My notes left
something to be desired. But here's a general idea of what happened:
The show was at the "Dallas Music Complex", which is a warehouse with
a stage. No seats. :-(
Bob did "I Want You" for the 2nd song. The 4th song was "Positively
4th Street". Very good, both of them. Bob was following most songs
with "Thank yew. Thank yew very much." This more talk than we heard
most of the time in Austin.
Then came "Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat". "Kick-Ass" arrangement and
great electric guitar by Bob.
Then Silvio. The band really rocked & Bob's on a roll with the
electric guitar. He seems to be extending his "lead" parts beyond the
obligatory & really getting into it. This is part of what makes this
tour so great. Bob seems to treat the performance as an art form of
its own. He's creating something new every night. (It may be that
someone else on the group has pointed this out, too)
The first acoustic song is "Tangled Up In Blue". This was the
highlight of the 11/4 Austin show for me & it's very good here, too.
He plays harp on this one. He gets into it, rocking back & forth,
"bobbing" up & down. Wonderful. Things are tight & hot at the stage
& a woman passes out next to me. Someone comes from off stage, lifts
her onto the stage & carries her off.
Then "Boots Of Spanish Leather". Very good, sensitive vocals by Bob.
See my mention of "performance as art" above.
The electric music starts up again with "God Knows". I notice that
Bob is directing Winston much more than he did in Austin. It seemed
like Bob would just look at Tony & Tony would relay the message
before. But tonite, on several occasions, Bob would look directly at
Winston when it was time for a change. I wondered if that meant Bob
was dissatisfied with what Winston was doing. Who knows?
During "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and a few other songs, the crowd
was singing along. I didn't see Bob acknowledge this in any way, but
I liked it.
When the band was leaving each time, Bob seemed to actually touch
someone in the audience. He made faces, stuck out his tongue, etc.
Sometimes after Bob's guitar and harp part, J.J. & Tony would look at
each other & grin. The idea I got was that Bob was really out-doing
himself tonite.
Two other women had to be helped out of the area in front of the stage
during the course of the show. Might be a good argument for reserved
seating & air conditioning.
Overall, maybe it wasn't quite as great as Austin on Sunday. But Bob
really was a "guitar legend" tonite. And seriously great on the harp,
too.
I'll post more about Austin tomorrow. It's late & I'm rambling.

Not having seen him live since '66 I caught the show in Dallas on
Tuesday. Man, that band was ALL OVER THE ROAD! Whether due to drugs,
exhaustion or arrogance no amount of spin can turn that mess into
art. Bury the rag deep, very deep.

Dylan did NOT do "Baby Blue" at the Dallas concert. That song does *not*
include the lyrics "No, no no noooo. It ain't me babe. It ain't me yer lookin'
for.......... babe."
It was "It Ain't Me Babe." Period.
The setlist posted on the web page is *wrong*.

All is correct, with the exception of #14. It was "It Ain't Me, Babe." Not
"Baby Blue." As has been posted, Bob went wild with the harmonica at the end
of the song... A little *too* wild, for me at least. He seemed to lose control
of his harmonica playing. But it was a fantastic performance anyway. Hard to
believe that this song to Suzy is, oh God, I don't want to think how old it
is....
