(Their reputation was) mostly acquired as backing band for the electric Bob Dylan. Music >From Big Pink sported a cover painting by Bob Dylan. Richard Manuel's contributions to the writing, including his collaborations with Bob Dylan, were important. Cahoots was a catastrophe, with the exception of Dylan's "When I Paint My Masterpiece".

I like the Dylan page, but have to put in my 2 cents about
The Band. Their "reputation" was not made as Dylan's backup
group('65-'66,'74), but rather on their own. I think it is
safe to say that they produced some of the most memorable, as
well as influencial music of the late 60s and early 70s. It
in fact, was mainly superior to Dylan's work at this time
(with the possible exception of John Wesley Harding)."Music
>From Big Pink","The Band","Stage Fright", and "Rock of Ages"
are among the best albums recorded during this period. Dylan
obviously had a big influence on Robbie Robertson's song-
writing, but The Band had an equally important musical
influence on Bob as well.
