Kalsom, Om (Umm Kulthum)

at359@yfn.ysu.edu (David Todd) - from The Telegraph:

A favourite singer: a powerhouse-voiced 20th Century-spanning Egyptian superstar and, as Bob put it affectionately, a "fat old lady that smoked a lot of hash"; gave an annual concert in Paris; did last show aged eighty-two and died at eighty-three.

I bought an Om Kalsoum LP some 20 years ago. Extraordinary stuff. An aquired taste for some, no doubt. But a taste for her music is definitely worth acquiring. Too bad she dead and we can expect nothing more from her.

Subject: recommendations for Om Kalsoum recordings? From: Dino Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 23:36:44 GMT I know this isn't the place, but Bob always had nice things to say about her, so I'm gonna ask here anyway. Seeing as I know nothing about arabic music and very little about Kalsoum herself, I have no idea where to start listening. I stumbled across Rashid Sales, Inc., an American company that imports lots (and lots) or Arabic music, including tons of Om Kalsoum material. one page worth is at: http://www.rashid.com/page04.html 2008: Try: rashid.com She also appears under other spellings (Omme Kalsoum, Oum Kolthoum, Om Kalthom), which adds even more tantalizing titles to the menu. Anyone got suggestions on where to start? I've tried dejanews and only found more companies selling her CD's and more people asking questions like this. thanks, Dino Om Kalsoum/Kulthom's Web Site (2008: does not work) 2008 article: Devotees of the Sad, Beautiful Voice of Umm Kulthum - (Washington Post) August 11, 2008 2010 story: Umm Kulthum: 'The Lady' Of Cairo (npr) Umm Kulthum (Wikipedia)
