Marcus, Greil

Rock critic and author of many books, such as "Invisible Republic",

Newsgroups: rec.music.dylan Subject: Dylan and Greil Marcus - Rolling Stone interview 22 Nov 01 From: Chris Rollason Date: 30 Nov 2001 12:54:30 -0800 From the 'Rolling Stone' interview published in the 22 Nov 01 issue (pp. 56-69), it emerges that if Bob Dylan has read any book about himself published in recent years, it's Greil Marcus' 'Invisible Republic' (now retitled 'The Old, Weird America'). On p. 66 Dylan argues in some detail that Marcus actually gives too much attention to the Harry Smith 'Anthology of American Folk Music' as an influence in the early 60s ('he makes way too much of that'), and not enough to the performers of those songs themselves ('Performers **did** know of that record, but it wasn't, in retrospect, the monumental iconic recording at the time that he makes it out to be'). Whether Dylan is historically right or wrong, this part of the interview shows him engaging carefully with the ideas of one of his most serious and committed commentators, and suggests, too, that contrary to what some have said, he is by no means always indifferent to those 'writers and critics' who analyse Bob Dylan with their pen! All I can say is that I'm glad to know Bob **has** read Greil Marcus' remarkable book! Christopher Rollason, M.A., Ph.D. Metz, France 'The power of Thought - the magic of the Mind!' I've always believed Dylan has enough integrity not to have made any comment (even an ambiguous one like that) had he not read the book. Dave
