Bob Dylan 2002.01.31 in Orlando, Florida

There was quite a discussion about the name of the new drummer:

Here is an excerpt from an e-mail sent to me by my brother, Drew, who
was at the show last night:

"the venue was the worst i've ever been to. we were on the
back of the floor and couldn't get close at all. we didnt'
see anything about anybody filming anything so i have no
idea what that's all about. dylan was in GREAT form last
night. very expressive and very animated. although i
couldn't tell cause he had a huge cowboy hat on and we were
so far away we couldn't see his face at all. the band
however, was definitely off. i attribut this entirely to
george. i hope he gets better, but last night you could tell
was his first concert if you know what i mean. he did a lot
better on the faster songs and definitely got better as the
show progressed, so it'll be interesting ot see if he gets
better over the next three shows. tell mike he's more like
winston than dave. he used the brushes on some of the
acoustic songs but he didn't have that "subtelty and taste".
right now i definitely think dave is a lot better, but we'll
see. the best songs of the night were, just like a woman,
lonesome day blues, tangled, drifters escape, rainy day
women and all the encores were good. the worst song of the
night was sugar baby (george's fault - he played too hard).
tony was coaching george all night. the harp solos were
great, and obviously very different. each one began the song
and he played it for a verse and then didn't play it again
on all eight songs. in short, the show was really good, but
not as good as the last tour. bob was wonderful and the band
needed to get it together."

Setlist was excellent considering he was not playing for the purposes of satisfying the tapers but rather the local folks who have not heard him in a while. The songs were all well played and done with joy and passion. The setlist was also impacted (IMO) by the new drummer (enough wrinkles to worry about without mixing it up for everyone...and first show in a couple of months). 2. New drummer will be fine, but he was being coached by Tony throughout. Bob grimaced a few times and smiled a few times on slips. He was pretty relaxed about it as the show progressed. I got the feeling that they had not rehearsed much with the new drummer, but it came off well. 3. Bob was lively and danced, swayed, bojanged (or jed clampet stepped). He clearly enjoyed the audience standing/dancing and having a good time. 4. The cowboy hat was normal sized and looked good with his attire. 5. Why was someone in the 3rd row holding up a sign from RDW through most of the encore that simply said "10"? Was this his rating for the show? 6. Definitely "panties" and "King". 7. It was great fun and I'm looking forward to Tampa!
