December 29, 2003 NATHANIEL STREET WEST DOES DYLAN
23-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist Nathaniel Street West's new release "Light Out For the Territory" includes renditions of  Visions of Johanna  and  Motorpsycho Nightmare.  Street West is signed to Puffin Records,  and there is a great web site dedicated to him at  http://www.nathanielstreetwest.com.   The website has more information and song clips from the album, including the two Dylan songs.  “Street West included these two Dylan songs because Dylan has been his primary musical influence since he was a baby and he intended this album to be a tribute to Dylan but not a cover album. "Light Out For the Territory" is a response (through Mark Twain) to the line from Dylan's song  Union Sundown:  From Broadway to the Milky Way, That's a lot of territory indeed.”............Available from:...amazon.com

December 11, 2003 GERRY DID FRANKIE LEE & JUDAS PRIEST!
Billboard magazine is reporting that the final collaboration of Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, due to be released March 23, 2004 will include a cover of  The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest.   To my knowledge, this will be the first commercially released English-language cover of the song.

December 3, 2003 J.W. SCHOLTE & BAND
Added in VOCALS recently was a new CD from The Netherlands by J.W. Scholte & Band
Just Like A Woman (Scholte sings Dylan)  includes a few rarely covered songs among it's 11 tracks, including  Going, Going, Gone  and Dirge.  IMHO, the standout track on the CD is  Idiot Wind.  All tracks are performed in English.  The CD is nicely presented in a tri-fold digipack with photos of the performers in the studio and others,  and full credits.
More info and contact information can be found on the Dutch-language COPYRIGHT JOKE website.  US buyers can order the CD by mailing $20 in cash.  Contact Copyright Joke for instructions.   (I have been told ordering instructions will also be added to their website.)
Thanks to Joke Scholte (and to Anton Bohnen for telling me of the CD)

August 25, 2003 SOBIG.F  VIRUS  ALERT
Friday and today I have been deluged with e-mails carrying the Sobig.F virus.  Some of these e-mails appear to be from here (@dylancoveralbums.com) as well as other Dylan-related addresses, but these are spoofed.  The virus uses addresses from the infected computer's address book to send fake e-mails.  Do not open any e-mails with attachments and subjects like "approved" or "my details" or others as listed in the description at:  http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sobig.f@mm.html

August 7, 2003 TITLE TRACKS RULES...  WHAT RULES?!
You may have noticed I've been very lax regarding the rules for the TITLE TRACKS pages.  I've basically been adding anything with a Dylan title on the front of the sleeve.  On the new additions list,  if I list only the title than it's the lead and/or A-side title.  If I note "B-side,"  it's the secondary side of a single.  If I note "EP Track" it's not the lead track.
August 5, 2003 MASKED & ANONYMOUS

Drove 50 miles to see "Masked & Anonymous" yesterday.  There are enough reviews around the web that I won't go into detail here, but I do think the mainstream critics are being too harsh.  It's not a great movie, but by no means the worst, either.  Bobcats will enjoy it... it's probably a prerequisite!  The music is great and Bob is...  well, Bob!  Much more interesting and enjoyable than "Hearts Of Fire."  There are more covers than on the CD hidden in the soundtrack,  I saw the GOLDEN GATE STRINGS listed in the credits.  Looking forward to  getting the DVD.

Speaking of "Masked & Anonymous," the soundtrack is being issued on vinyl by Classic Records.  See: http://classicrecords.com

H.P. Bushoff is searching for a few Blowin' In The Wind  singles with picture-sleeves...  look HERE and contact him if you can help with his quest.
July 23, 2003 HOOCH GANG VOL. 2

Added to VOCALS is SHELTER FROM THE STORM,  a 2nd volume of Bob covers from Austria's Hooch Gang.  The album, recorded live late last year, is highly recommended.  Most of the songs are from the 70s or later, including  Standing In The Doorway  and  Sugar Baby, and the rarely-covered Mozambique.  One non-Dylan track is Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground,  the Willie Nelson song that Bob himself covered on the B-side of a single.  The only '60s songs are Baby Blue  and  two versions of Just Like A Woman,  one of which is a great instrumental that sounds like a lost Santo & Johnny track.  Visit the HOOCH GANG WEBSITE (in German.)......Thanks to Hooch Gang and Alfred Reitinger;   and to Joseph Pohlschneider for the tip
July 20, 2003 CHILLIN LIKE DYLAN
Added in VOCALS: CHILLIN LIKE DYLAN  by Spirits in the Rock, a Hawaii-based band.  The CD-R  has 9 tracks, just under 40 minutes.

July 16, 2003 TITLE TRACKS POLICY CHANGE
Due to overwhelming popular demand..  well, a few of you!...  I will soon begin adding picture-sleeves with TRANSLATED TITLES to the TITLE TRACKS pages.  I'm undecided how I will do it.  I don't think I should mix the translated titles with the regular sleeves.  Any suggestions will be appreciated. The same rules will apply:  The Dylan title must appear on the sleeve so it will be legible on the webpage. The Dylan title doesn't have to be the "A" side.  It makes no difference if the song itself is translated,  or is the regular English version with only the title translated in the local language.  If you would like to submit scans,  please attach only 1 scan per e-mail, to avoid overtaxing my mailbox.  And please provide the discographical info:  Artist,  label & catalog number, country of issue, and year of release (if known.)

June 26, 2003 MASKED & ANONYMOUS SOUNDTRACK
The tracklist for the “Masked & Anonymous” sountrack has been revealed,  and it's receiving a lot of criticism on the various Dylan newsgroups & forums for it's lack of Bob content, but it's selection of covers should give it a warmer reception here.  There will be regular edition and a limited edition, the limited edition digipack adds a bonus sampler of the upcoming SACD hybrid reissues.  The bonus disc is unrelated to the movie, as are several of the tracks on the soundtrack itself! (as compared to the screened versions of the film.)  On the soundtrack CD:
• There are 4 songs by Bob: Down In The Flood, Diamond Joe, Dixie and Cold Irons Bound.
• Some of the covers are familiar: Gotta Serve Somebody  by Shirley Caesar, Like A Rolling Stone  by Articolo 31
• Two Dead/Garcia covers, unknown if different than the common ones: It's All Over Now, Baby Blue by Grateful Dead and  Jerry's Señor
• Of the 6 remaining covers, some have been available before and some are new:  My Back Pages by Magokoro Brothers (a Japanese duo);  Most Of The Time by Sweden's Sophie Zelmani; On A Night Like This by Los Lobos; One More Cup Of Coffee by Sertab Erener (see 5/30 news item); Non Dirle Che Non E' Cosi' (If You See Her, Say Hello,) an Italian translation by Francesco De Gregori, and City Of Gold, the unreleased Dylan song from the upcoming Dixie Hummingbirds album.

May 28, 2003 WEBHOST PROBLEMS UPDATE
My webhost “has been experiencing a severe Denial of Service (DOS) attack since last week, resulting in slowness and, in some cases, the unavailability of HostSave's website and mail services... Most website and mail performance issues have been stabilized by network upgrades implemented by our engineering team. The changes made to the network continue to absorb most of the traffic generated by the attack; however, you may still experience periodic slowness and brief downtime until the attack is eliminated at its source.”

May 21, 2003 THE BOB DYLAN SONG BOOK
Added to the site today is THE BOB DYLAN SONG BOOK,  a tribute CD released last year by the UK label Klone, that specializes in tribute CDs.  No artist is credited, except for a musician listing in the fine print.  Therefore I have listed the CD at the end of the VOCALS section.  Nothing too special on this one,  just 10 of Bob's best performed in familiar style,  the singer is similar to but not an exact "klone" of Bob.
I have no on-line source for this CD.  The label's website is www.kloneuk.com, but several attempts to e-mail them have received no response, and many of the site's links don't work.  An order from another UK online seller has been backordered for over a month.  The CD has been available at shops in Germany.  Good luck!   .....Thanks to Dirk Krah

May 15, 2003 BASEMENT NOISE

May 13, 2003 POSITIVELY 12th & K
I recently heard the upcoming  POSITIVELY 12th & K  CD.  This album, drawn from 2 tribute shows by a group of Sacramento, CA artists, is excellent.  Sal Valentino, leader of The Beau Brummels in the '60s and later Stoneground, makes his first recordings in over 25 years.  Also featured are folk/blues phenom Jackie Greene who released his debut album just last year.  Greene's band functions as house band on many of the tracks.  Other performers include Sherman Baker, Lew Fratis, Billy Harper Jr. and Mick Martin, who turns in a blistering Lonesome Day Blues.  The shows were recorded 8/02 & 1/03 at Marilyn's, 12th & K (hence the title) in Sacramento.  Street date for the Dig Music release is 5/27.  Full track list, ordering info and more at:  POSITIVELY 12th & K.   ........Thanks to Marty DeAnda/Dig Music

April  5, 2003 MAY YOUR SONG ALWAYS BE SUNG VOL. 3
CD (Germany) Due to be released May 26 is Volume 3 of BMG's “May Your Song Always Be Sung” series of Dylan tribute albums.  Volume 3 follows the ORIGINAL 1997 CD and 2001's VOLUME 2.  An excerpt from the liner notes:

Volume 3 is different from the previous two: first, it’s a double, then it’s a digipack, and then you’ll see some names in the track listing that you might not know. The concept of this album was to gather some of the musically most interesting Dylan covers of recent years on one compilation. So you’ll see some well known artist names in the track listing, even some songs that were exclusively done for this project, and a lot of names that you might not be familiar with, but will make you want to hear more.  --  Hanns Peter Bushoff

It's a good one!  More info and a full tracklisting.........Thanks to HP

March  28, 2003 THINKING ABOUT BOB DYLAN
I have added the 2002 CD  THINKING ABOUT BOB DYLAN  in VARIOUS ARTISTS.  The CD presents 6 Dylan covers + 6 originals (some are about Bob) by six singer/songwriters: Rex Foster, Jack Tannehill, Danny Schmidt, Kate & Paul (Sobolewski), Will Hoppey and Norman Lamont.
Mr. Tambourine Man by Jack Tannehill was edited after this original release.  The new version of the song is included on a bonus disc (along with 5 more originals by album artists) that is available for free to purchasers of the remaining stock of the original pressing.  Subsequent pressings will include the updated track.
This CD has been available since last year, but at the time I was told of the upgrade and decided to wait for the new edition.  Since it now appears that isn't imminent, I've added it as-is.....For more info visit:  thinkingaboutbobdylan.com

February  13, 2003 GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY: THE GOSPEL SONGS OF BOB DYLAN

Press release from Sony/Legacy: (tracklist at end)
• VARIOUS ARTISTS - "GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY: THE GOSPEL SONGS OF BOB DYLAN" ARRIVES IN STORES MARCH 25 ON COLUMBIA RECORDS
• FEATURES NEW VERSIONS OF SONGS FROM DYLAN'S TWO GOSPEL ALBUMS -- "SLOW TRAIN COMING" AND "SAVED" -- PERFORMED BY TODAY'S TOP GOSPEL ARTISTS
• INCLUDES A BRAND-NEW DUET BY BOB DYLAN AND MAVIS STAPLES ON WHOLLY REWRITTEN VERSION OF "GONNA CHANGE MY WAY OF THINKING"
• SHIRLEY CAESAR, AARON NEVILLE, FAIRFIELD FOUR, MIGHTY CLOUDS OF JOY, LEE WILLIAMS AND THE SPIRITUAL QCs, AMONG THOSE CONTRIBUTING TO THE 11 NEWLY-RECORDED TRACKS
• THIS COLLECTION MARKS THE REUNION OF DYLAN'S GOSPEL TOURING BAND PERFORMING "SOLID ROCK" WITH SOUNDS OF BLACKNESS

"I like the fact that Bob Dylan couldn't care less about what people say or think about his music, because you write what's in your heart." - Shirley Caesar, the queen of gospel
"I think it's interesting, twenty years now from that time, from that gospel period, there's now a record with people singing those songs. So, twenty years had to go by for people to become aware of the fact that Bob Dylan is one of our great gospel writers?" -- drummer Jim Keltner
Nearly a quarter-century after Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" cracked the Top 30 and garnered him his first Grammy Award, a new album by that name, GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY: THE GOSPEL SONGS OF BOB DYLAN, presents eleven newly-recorded renditions of songs from Slow Train Coming and Saved performed by today's leading gospel artists, including Aaron Neville ("Saving Grace"), Mighty Clouds of Joy ("Saved"), Lee Williams and the Spiritual QCs ("When You Gonna Wake Up"), the Fairfield Four ("Are You Ready"), and Shirley Caesar, the queen of gospel herself, performing the title track.  The compilation allows these songs to be heard finally in a wholly new and fresh context, perhaps the very context in which they were always destined to be heard - as pure, unadulterated gospel music.  The title arrives in stores March 25th on Columbia Records, a division of Sony Music.
GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY also includes a new duet by Bob Dylan and Mavis Staples of the Staples Singers on his smoking-hot, rewritten version of "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking," recorded with his 2002 touring band.
"The music is great -- it's uplifting too," says Joe Ligon of the Grammy Award-winning ensemble Mighty Clouds of Joy, contemporary gospel's
preeminent group, known for its trademark quartet style.  Says Ligon, the group's co-founder and leader since 1955, "The music sounds like back home in one of those sanctified churches where I come from, where everybody would get up, and they would be beating a tambourine, and playing the drums, and all of that's going on, and the old ladies, and the young people clapping, and people falling out and feeling God's spirit."
That spirit is heard in the joyous sound of a revival meeting in the Mighty Clouds of Joy's version of "Saved" and in the inspirational, soulful testifying by Detroit singer Rance Allen on "When He Returns."
"The writer of 'When He Returns' has to have had a real experience with the Lord, because those kind of lyrics do not come up out of just singing and writing," said Allen, a featured lead vocalist along with Men of Standard on Something About the Name Jesus" from Kirk Franklin's 1998 blockbuster album The Nu Nation Project.  "It's powerful stuff, powerful stuff."
It wasn't hard to convince these artists to take part in this project. Many of them were already familiar with Bob Dylan's material.  Shirley Caesar, whose crowded trophy closet includes 10 Grammys and 17 Dove awards, sang "Gotta Serve Somebody" at the request of Bob Dylan when President Clinton presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Kennedy Center in 1997.
Mavis Staples, of course, has been a friend of Bob Dylan's for over 40 years (as can be heard near the beginning of "Change My Way of Thinking,"
when Dylan stops the band in order to give Staples a hearty greeting when she wanders into the recording session mid-song). Bob Dylan songs were staples of the Staple Singers' repertoire of "message music" since the early 1960s, and the group ? the first African-American performers to record a Bob Dylan song -- helped make anthems out of Dylan songs like "Blowin' in the Wind," "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" and "Masters of War."
Nor was Aaron Neville a stranger to the work of Bob Dylan; his version of "I Shall Be Released" graced his 2000 gospel album, "Devotion."  He has also recorded a version of "Don't Fall Apart on Me Tonight," and with the Neville Brothers he recorded "The Ballad of Hollis Brown and "With God on Our Side."
Formed in 1921, The Fairfield Four - who were recently featured in both the film and soundtrack to "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and in the "Down from the Mountain" documentary and concert tour -- stamp "Are You Ready" with their four-part harmony vocals in the vintage, "jubilee" style the quartet helped to create.
The genesis of GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY: THE GOSPEL SONGS OF BOB DYLAN goes back to 1980, when as a college freshman, executive producer Jeffrey Gaskill attended his first Bob Dylan show.  During this period, Dylan had put aside his political anthems and searing personal ballads in favor of set lists drawn almost entirely of songs from Slow Train Coming and Saved."
"I recognized he was taking a stand and doing something highly unusual for someone in his position, and I was amazed by that," remembers Gaskill.  "I felt the obligation to entrust these songs to the finest gospel singers to be found."
The album -- produced by Joel Moss, best known for his Grammy Award-winning work with gospel singer Cissy Houston -- also reunites Bob Dylan's touring band from his "born-again" period, including bassist Tim Drummond, guitarist Fred Tackett, pianist Terry Young, and drummer Jim Keltner, on a jubilant version of "Solid Rock" performed with Grammy-winning group, Sounds of Blackness, the choir from Dylan's home state of Minnesota.  Also featured is a lead vocal by Regina McCrary, one of the backup singers from Dylan's gospel albums and concert tours, performing "Pressing On" with the Grammy-nominated Chicago Mass Choir.
The album features contributions by organist Spooner Oldham (Percy Sledge, Neil Young) -- also a member of the original gospel touring band - who lends his Hammond B-3 organ to Aaron Neville's version of "Saving Grace," and keyboardist Billy Preston (the Beatles, the Rolling Stones), who plays on two tracks, including a rendition of "What Can I Do For You?" by Grammy nominee and Dove Award-winner Helen Baylor.  The album also includes a version of "I Believe in You" by Atlanta-based, Dove and Stellar award-winning vocalist Dottie Peoples.
"On this recording, we can separate what Dylan is saying in his gospel songs from the drama of his saying it," writes author Tom Piazza in the album's liner notes.  In addition, says Piazza, "we see, again, how rooted Dylan is in the grain of American music, the Saturday night/Sunday morning tug-of-war that has lent tension and fire to the fact of the Gospel in the singing of Ralph Stanley, Little Richard, Charley Patton, Muddy Waters, and Hank Williams, among so many others."
For Regina McCrary, who sang with Bob Dylan throughout the original gospel period in 1979-1981, GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY  brings things full circle.  A lead vocalist with the Bobby Jones Gospel Choir and the daughter of the late Reverend Sam McCrary  -- "the Singing Preacher" of the Fairfield Four -- McCrary says, "I don't think that a song that is written about God -- about his 'Saving Grace' or about 'Serve Somebody' or 'Pressing On' or 'Saved' or 'I Believe in You' or 'Are You Ready' -- will ever die, no matter who wrote them.  But because Bob Dylan wrote them and we're going in and we're doing them over now, I think that all it does is just remind people that this man is God-gifted."

February  3, 2003 FOLK FROM THE NORTH WEST COUNTRY
Dana Magnuson, a folk singer from Idaho, has released a trilogy of CD-Rs that include some Dylan covers.  The tracks are a mix of tapes recorded in non-studio settings from 1969-75, plus some newly recorded tracks (1999-2002.)  All the Dylan covers except Tryin' To Get To Heaven are from the early tapes.  It's all very confusing, as each CD has 3 titles!  Other tracks are originals, traditionals, some Hank Williams and other covers.  Magnuson's vocals have a Dylan-esque twang.  It's what you would expect from 30 year old, unreleased, "non-studio setting" recordings!  For completists only, IMHO. Like A Rolling Stone sounds like a vocal overdub experiment gone terribly wrong,  Going, Going, Gone & Stuck Inside Of Mobile are only 1:29 & 1:03 respectively, St. Augustine is a little longer at 2:38.  The newer and studio-recorded Tryin' To Get To Heaven is a big improvement.  Distributed by Sooyaapoo Records.
